DEFRA ANNOUNCE £5.9 MILLION FUNDING TO RESTORE OUR ANCIENT WOODLANDS! 🌳🙌

Wild Card's #RewildTheGhostWoods campaign has called on @defrauk and @forestryengland to scale up the restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites (PAWS). These are former ancient woodlands chopped down and buried beneath non-native conifer plantations.

Ancient woodlands are the UK's most biodiverse habitat, and their restoration is essential to meeting the nation's climate and biodiversity targets. With your help, we've been asking the Government to dedicate funding to restoring this vital habitat.

AND WE WON!

The (now former) Minister for Nature, Mary Creagh, recently announced dedicated funding to restoring our Ghost Woods *for the first time ever*.

That's nearly £6 million of funding from the previous... £0.

And we couldn't have done it without YOU!

Over the course of this campaign:

📝147,000 people signed our petition fronted by Dame Judi Dench

👻Members of the public from Cornwall to Yorkshire organised ‘Ghost Hunts’ in their local Ghost Woods

🎨Artists from across the country came together to create our Ghost Woods Video Zine celebrating our ancient woodlands, which we launched in London

✉️You sent nearly 3,000 emails to the minister for nature

⚖️Over 40 MPs supported an early day motion for ancient woodland restoration

🐛And the largest ever gathering of slugs took to Parliament Square to deliver our petition and demand more funding for ancient woodland restoration!

Of course, we're not going to sit back and say 'job done!' - that's not how we work. We'll be holding Andy Burnham's new government to account and making sure this funding is used properly.

A full day in the forest 🌳 🪓

Today’s job:

5 × 5m poles (50cm)
20 × 8m poles (25–35cm)

Left to crack on, get the timber stacked and ready for an upcoming event ✌️

Days like this are why I love forestry 🙏🏻

Progression over perfection 👌🏻💚🌳

THANK YOU! 💚

Yesterday the largest EVER gathering of slugs marched to DEFRA to deliver our 146,000 signature petition calling for vital ancient woodland restoration! 🌳

We are so thrilled that so many of you turned up and made the day so much fun.

Now for the shoutouts....

Massive thanks to all the stewards and organisers, to the photographers and videographers, to @38degrees_uk for hosting the petition, to @thelostgiantmakers and @xr_artblockers for our incredible props and costumes and to all our amazing speakers (@youngwilders_, @ancientwoodlandsuk, @the_wellstead_rewilding)! Thank you also to @andrewgeorge_cornwall for taking the time to come and talk to us, and to Connor at DEFRA for accepting our petition. This was truly a team effort and we've left feeling so inspired by everyone involved. 🫶

Do you agree… people only want to see people grow in this industry? 🌳

Since starting out, most people I’ve met have tried to help me improve —
and in a job like this, that matters more than anything 🙏🏻

I’ll probably never be a millionaire doing this…
it’s physically and mentally demanding, but I genuinely love it. 🙏🏻
Having positive people around you who actually want to see you progress is key. 💪

You’ll always come across a bit of negativity…
but it’s easy to ignore when you’re focused on getting better.

progress over perfection.

How many plants can you identify in this video? 🤔🌱
Respecting the world around you starts with knowing what’s there and understanding it. Let’s try to take notice and learn from nature this spring! 🌷🌿🌼
