Wow! Yesterday was heart warming and rewarding. Special thank to every volunteer and partner that implemented a simple but powerful collective act: a community clean up from Esplanade to Poland Ave all St Claude and into the neighborhoods! We pruned trees, weeded, picked up trash, and cleaned catch basins.

What else could we do as a community to make our neighborhood and our lives just a little better? The sky is the limit.

Special thanks to @theinkwellpress @neworleanshealingcenter @peppspubnola @recycle_dat and @weareglassroots for shirts, space, and equipment! #Greenteamneworleans #bywater #marigny #neworleanssmallbusiness #communitycleanup @climateculture_nola

We did a lil neighborhood cleaning! Clean your catchbasins yall. You could wait around for the city to do it or you could realize that YOU ARE the city and you’re only waiting for yourself. Thanks @bymbo.nola for hosting and facilitating and organizing and all that stuff.

A site visit, a dream come true. @theshore.co led a small group of collaborators and key stakeholders to visit Shell Beach and San Malo with @bayoubarkada to listen, learn, and feel the history of place. We stood atop a Chitimacha Mound made of Rangia Clam shells, grown over with native plants- still standing above water after both Fort Proctor and a concrete navy yard had fallen to storms past. Named for a free leader of a marooned community, San Malo island also housed one of the first Filipino fishing settlements in the United States.

How can we honor the impermanence of settlement and the permanence of spirit? There are so many stories to tell. Looking forward to watching @paris.cian journey to build art as infrastructure with community.

The work continues! You came with us on a journey this Spring to See The Vision: Public Art as Infrastructure @smallcenter.tulane . With the help of @notcfoundation the @climateculture_nola community awarded @paris.cian @theshore.co @bayoubarkada a $5,000 grant to push forward the development of a floating stage platform to commemorate San Malo, a place of many peoples and stories. A place that speaks to climate migration, community, and standing up for freedom.

My favorite part about Climate Culture is how it strengthens the connective tissue between disparate communities over time. Slowly each of us can change our role in the collective, and in the world. We can plug in, we can support each other, we can lead, we can grow together.

Stay tuned to learn more about how you can be part of the process. See you this fall @canoa.nola 😘 and @joanmitchellcenter_nola

#FlashbackFriday to earlier this week when we saw so many impressive New Orleanians honored as some of Gambit’s “40 Under 40” list, while working in various capacities to move this city forward – literally. Over the years, they’ve made a huge difference in mobility spaces, and we’re happy they’re being recognized for their efforts:

Tile 2: Nellie Catzen, who wears many hats including Executive Director of the Committee for a Better New Orleans but also as Co-Chair of both the New Orleans Complete Streets Coalition and the Coalition for Quality Transit.

Tile 3: Ray Fontaine, who also keeps herself busy with a number of projects, including her work as Co-founder of Climate Culture New Orleans and as a Founding Board Member of the Bywater Marigny Business Organization (or ByMBO), and who was an invaluable partner in the SPARK “Light Up St. Claude” in early January. This community-led event featured a spotlight on how to make St. Claude Avenue a safer place for those walking, biking and taking transit on a busy but dangerous commercial corridor.

Tile 4: Alexis Marceaux, who when not singing in the amazing band Sweet Crude is advocating as the Director of Community Programming for the Lafitte Greenway Partnership for safer, more accessible and (frankly) economically powerful public spaces.

Tile 5: Kendra Smith-Parks, who while now is working as a Communications Strategist for Red Cypress Consulting, was also a huge partner in the staging of a recent Bike to Work Day at City Hall while working with Gambel Communications. (We have long memories, Kendra!)

Congratulations to everyone for helping everyone to bike and walk NOLA! #bikewalknola #mobility #safety #40Under40

Thank you to the @crcl1988 for the education and fun of this past year’s #CoastalLeadershipInstitute. This past Friday, we celebrated our graduation by visiting Avery Island, the home of @tabasco. Before #CLI, I had been only peripherally aware of many aspects of Louisiana’s culture and ecology. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore the different coastal towns in Louisiana and learn what has shaped them. Our crew got to visit Neptune’s Pass, learn about Mister Go, attend Coastal Day at the Capitol, and visit with the Pointe au Chien tribe, to name a few. Attending this course alongside an unparalleled group of 40 Louisianians - from chefs to photographers, from organizers to industry - brought perspective and experience that I will carry forward with me in my work in the Gulf region and beyond.

Thank you @betterbayou and @habitat.recovery.project for supporting my participation in this program!

Applications are now open if you are excited to learn more about Louisiana @crcl1988.

Let’s race to the top, Louisiana. Because we have the resources, the talent, and the innovation to do it, AND we need leaders to open the way.

Instead of incentivizing businesses that pollute our air, water, and soil, what if we incentivized companies that cleaned our air, water, and soil?

Instead of perpetuating the gap between the haves and the have nots, what if we build an economy by driving growth in the middle class?

Love Your City exists to help communities measure more than just the bottom line, but the return on social and environmental investment.

And we believe that every community has individuals and organizations that can come together to build a better future, and we hope you will follow along with us to discuss what solutions are possible.

Because what we have now? It’s not working.

But you and your organization? Yes, it is working. It’s working hard every day to build a world that we all want to see. And we want to lift up your voice!

Shout out to the @noladatacenter for always making such important data so accessible.
