I love a good upcycle, and thus, I keep 90% of my Instax film protection thingies. We gotta do our part to save the planet, Yah know?

Turns out, they make for some nice canvases to doodle on.

What's cool to think is that each one represents 10 pictures taken.

So excited to announce OKAJ will be joining us at the Battiss Art Festival this year!!!

Bold, playful, and deeply expressive, OKAJ’s work invites viewers into a world where imagination meets emotion. His instantly recognisable characters, vibrant colour palettes, and striking symbolism explore themes of identity, courage, vulnerability, hope, and self-discovery.

Each painting tells a story, blending contemporary street art influences with fine art techniques to create works that are both thought-provoking and joyfully accessible.

OKAJ embraces freedom of expression, celebrates individuality, and reminds us that art has the power to challenge, inspire, and connect us.

Join us this September as we celebrate creativity, curiosity, and the fearless spirit of South African art.

Battiss Art Festival
24–27 September
📍 Walter Battiss Art Museum, 45 Paulet street, Somerset East

Undercurrents might be the first exhibition I’ve curated, but in many ways, it feels like something that had been forming for a very long time.

When I joined the @beyondtheframescollective Life Drawing Sessions and started getting to know some of the artists on a deeper level, it became impossible not to notice how many of us had learned to conform in our different own ways.

We had different lives, different histories, different experiences, and yet , over time, there were so many shared tensions that started to slowly break the surface.

And so…the idea of Undercurrents started to emerge.

Undercurrents brings together twenty-nine artists working with the human figure to examine forces that are not fully visible. Pressure builds beneath the body’s surface. It is held in gesture, in language, and in inherited structures of culture, lineage, and power. These works follow how that pressure settles and how it registers, without always becoming explicit.

In South Africa, where histories of regulation, belief, and social control continue to shape how bodies are read and performed, these conditions take on specific weight. What is inherited may not be immediately visible, but it persists in posture, behaviour, and form, setting limits on what can be expressed and how.

Undercurrents does not attempt to make these dynamics fully legible or to reconcile the differences between the works. It remains with what resists clarity, holding attention at the threshold between what is shown and what remains unresolved.

The surface holds.

But it is never still.
