As we shift into the colder weather and darker evenings it’s important to take some time to nourish yourself with calming rituals and giving yourself the grace you deserve. Let’s not try and do it all, small consistent steps are key to making the changes you want. #feelatone #inflammation #inflammationsupport #healthyhabitsforlife #createaritualforthisday

What if some of the biggest challenges women face – from crippling period pain, to anxiety, fluctuating mood, brain fog and burnout in midlife – are actually hormonal, and we’re still not joining the dots?

In this episode of Health 360: Lessons Lived and Learned, Oonagh O’Hagan is joined by Professor Mary Ryan and Dr Louise Newson to talk honestly about the full hormonal journey: first periods, PMDD, PMOS, endometriosis, fertility, perimenopause and menopause.
They unpack the confusion around “HRT and breast cancer”, explain bio-identical vs synthetic hormones, and share the red flags women (and parents) should never be told to “just put up with”.
They discuss the role hormones play in mental health challenges and even when linked to committing serious crimes and how a new approach needs to happen immediately.

Meet Oonagh.
She was still paying off her student loan.
She needed £2 million in two weeks.
Bank after bank said no.
One said yes.
Now her pharmacies ship to 80 countries.

Oonagh O'Hagan grew up at the foot of the Sperrin Mountains in Tyrone.

Her mum ran a factory floor of women. Oonagh watched her rally every one of them.

She didn't know it yet, but she was learning how to lead.

She trained as a pharmacist at Meaghers on Baggot Street. On her last day, she asked the owner to call her if he ever sold.

Four years later, he did.
A big chain had offered £2 million.

She had two weeks. No computer. A student loan still to pay.
She wrote a plan over one weekend and took it from bank to bank.

Rejection after rejection. She kept walking in.

Then AIB said yes.
In 2001, the shop was hers.

Then 2008.
Pharmacy payments were cut by 38%. Her business to lose €560,000 in days.

Every lease and every loan was hers.
She saw one way out. Close two stores.

So she rang her mum.
Her mum told her to bring her team together.
They would see what she couldn't.

One dark October night, she wrote the cold, hard numbers on a flip chart and let the silence sit.
Then she said it. Two stores would have to close.

One of her longest serving team members spoke up.
"Absolutely not."
"We left with 36 ideas. I only had one."

She never decided alone again.
↳ She'd still cover a shift herself so a team member could get to a hospital appointment
↳ 10 pharmacies and an online store serving over 80 countries
↳ One of Ireland's Great Places to Work, year after year
↳ A mentor to women scaling their own businesses
She didn't build it by having all the answers.
She built it by asking.
You don't have to carry it alone.

WHAT IF WE STOPPED WAITING UNTIL WE FELT UNWELL?

One of the biggest messages I took from Empower Her in Dublin was this:

Your health is something you can actively invest in.

Professor Mary Ryan reminded us of the importance of understanding our bodies and being proactive about our health, while Dr Louise Newson highlighted hormones, inflammation and protecting our health for the years ahead.

And this is where yoga fits beautifully.

Yoga isn’t just about the body or holding a beautiful shape.

We move. We breathe. We strengthen. We regulate. We recover.

But yoga also works with the mind and mood — helping us become more aware of how we feel, how we breathe, how we respond to stress and how we can create moments of calm within a busy life.

Regular yoga practice may support healthy stress regulation and inflammatory balance, helping the body and mind to recover and thrive.

I was also inspired by the work of Oonagh O’Hagan and Dr Daniel Jones and their At One approach to inflammation, nutrition and our natural daily rhythms.

There is no single magic answer to health.

MOVE. BREATHE. NOURISH. REST. RECOVER. THRIVE.

That is what empowerment means to me.

Not simply living longer.

Living well for longer. ❤️

Strong body. Clear mind. Joyful soul.

Welcome to the era of ‘JOINING THE DOTS’ for women so that we can help our daughters and all the girls and women that we love

We are no longer going to dismiss women with heavy painful periods.

We are no longer going to ignore women who are severely emotional during their period.

We are no longer going to dismiss women with severe period pain and tell them to get on with it

It’s time to wake up and to educate ourselves about period health and hormone health and to treat women with respect

I was so delighted to participate in this podcast about periods, PMDD, PMS, endometriosis, fertility and menopause with @menopause_doctor and @oonaghohag

This is the reason @menopause_doctor and myself wrote our respective books ‘it’s probably your periods’ and ‘ Power of your Hormones’

We will continue to push boundaries and get better treatment for women

Your gut health has a huge impact on your overall health. Healing your gut and empowering your body to effectively absorb the nutrients from your diet is essential to feeling energised and well.
Our At One formulas have been created to help balance inflammation in the body and support the repair of damage in our systems including our digestive system. Addressing a leaky gut with lifestyle changes, stress management and supporting these changes with a ritual like At One Morning Start and Evening restore could make all the difference to your daily life.
