On June 23rd, 14 residents of Marpole, members of the south van neighbourhood assembly and Off the Defensive (Vancouver) held a meeting with their MLA, Sunita Dhir.

Neighbours came together to demand action from Sunita on key housing issues:

1. Support the Vacancy Control Bill M218 which was introduced by the Saanich MLA Rob Botterell and reach out to other MLAs to support it getting to second reading.

2. Discuss with the Minister of Housing & Municipalities about 311 and the challenges tenants are having with getting things dealt with.

3. Use your role in the BC Legislature to end the Additional Rent Increases.

Sunita offered little action for each request. She claimed she’s hearing from corporate landlords who are saying they can’t afford to keep their buildings. Yet, attendants described how our rents keep going up while our buildings lack maintenance.

The general response from Sunita was ‘we can look into it’ and suggestions for resources for us to look into (the Residential Tenancy Branch, Vancouver City Council, calling 311, the Human Rights Tribunal and the Minister of Housing). However, even as our elected government representative, she implied she was powerless to help us. If she cannot solve our problems who can? This is what bureaucracy looks like. We need to organize our neighbourhood and confront our landlords to solve our problems directly. These politicians will not do it for us.

The Barricade Podcast is Now Live!

This is a podcast launched by OTD/OP (currently only in English) to highlight stories of working class struggle and develop the political analysis we need to fight and win.

The very first episode is focused on neighbourhood organizing and popular power, interviewing Hamna and Steve - two members of Off the Defensive who were involved in organizing our founding conference. They speak about their experience of neighbourhood organizing in Toronto, the lessons they have learned, and how OTD/OP will help us take the fight in our neighbourhoods to the next level.

Right now, the episode can be found on apple podcasts and spotify, or directly on the libsyn site.

Ontario landlords have been applying for and granted Above Guideline Increases to tenants' rent, in some cases with unaddressed maintenance issues and work not being done properly. Tenant organizers say that AGIs are "just another way to make rent unaffordable for long term tenants."

Our feature explores AGIs and how tenants are fighting back.

Calling all neighbourhood organizers in Vancouver! ☎️ Do you want to unite with neighbourhoods locally and across Canada to build working class power?

We want to hear from you! 👋

Off The Defensive is a new cross-country organization that unites neighbourhood organizers. The Vancouver Chapter aims to link neighbourhood working class struggles across the Lower Mainland.

Through our past experiences, we have found that our local struggles can often lose momentum. When we aren’t united across neighbourhoods, it can lead to a lack of strategy, capacity, and aspiration - we call this limitation “localism”

We need a strategic horizon to overcome localism, keep up the fight and to stay united. Our strategic horizon is socialism!

Let’s share the lessons of our neighbourhood organizing and learn from our past experiences to go beyond our neighbourhoods and become united across Canada.

It is time to get off the defensive! 🥊
