POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today I did a little incense listening session for our team in NY where we smelled some woods, resins, and incenses I’ve collected over the years. What a total pleasure to be able to share my passion with those I love. Thanks for the photo @adamaleger

The more skilled artisans I meet, the more I am pulled to celebrate the wisdom of many generations, what's been building over time, the knowledge of the hand and the eye.

So many of the things in this world are made from generations of shared knowledge, which is to be celebrated and valued.

Our robes are made by a small tailoring studio in Bali using textiles made with traditional processes like hand-stamped batik or plant-based natural dyeing. We've designed them to be functional, with pockets and an inner tie and a roomy fit.

These robes are a joy to wear, but also a frame for the craft.

Visiting Dia Beacon was my favorite art experience of 2023—every moment was both a clap of thunder and a whisper, a little heart quake.

This weekend, Arianna Petrich will host artist-led open hours for The Water and the Wind, between noon and 4pm on Sunday.

In January 2023, Petrich visited 8 incense masters in Awaji, Japan. She walked through their workshops and factories, and learnt about the process from start to finish. The results of that visit manifest in this series of thoughtful photographic works, which are enlivened by the incense she collected on her trip.

The exhibition closes next friday, October 25. Come by Sunday, or during our open hours next week.

Upcoming at the #IAOGallery:

ARIANNA PETRICH
The Water and the Wind: Incense Craft in Awaji, Japan
October 4 — 25, 2024
Opening Reception: Friday, October 4, 6–8 pm

In 595 B.C., a piece of agarwood washed ashore on Awaji Island, Japan, marking the introduction of incense, as the story goes. Over 1400 years later, the island remains a major incense production center, with 70% of Japan’s incense made there by 14 master craftsmen, or koh-shi.

‘The Water and the Wind’ is a solo exhibition of Ariana Petrich’s journey to Awaji, featuring quiet, striking photographs accompanied by tendrils of incense smoke.

Arianna Petrich is a Los Angeles-based visual and spatial designer and artist, whose work explores incense traditions and craft production across cultures.

Thank you to everyone that helped make this dream installation come true. Couldn’t have done it without @a.l.basa assistance in sourcing and installing.
