As Omo Awo Ifagbenusola Popoola reminded us during Faiths for Climate Justice Week webinar, we cannot keep sand-filling waterways and coastal areas in the name of development and assume that water will simply disappear.

In Lagos, the stakes are already high. About 18% of Lagos State lies on a low-lying coastal plain prone to regular flooding, while 86% of the coastline is subject to erosion. Unregulated land reclamation, sand mining and encroachment into wetlands can further reduce the natural systems that protect communities from flooding and storm surges.

Our faith traditions call us to something different: stewardship, not domination; protection, not destruction. Across faiths, creation is understood as something sacred that carries moral responsibility.

Development should not mean fighting nature until nature fights back.

YORÙBÁ LEVEL: DO YOU BELIEVE THE ODÙDUWÀ CREATION STORY?

As a Yorùbá person, do you believe the account that Odùduwà descended from the heavens by a chain and played a central role in the creation of the earth at Ilé Ifẹ̀?

Many of us accept the creation stories of other cultures and religions without hesitation. Yet, when it comes to our own inherited accounts, we are often quick to dismiss them as myths or superstition.

In this conversation, Ifagbenusola Owomide Popoola asks an important question: Why do some Yorùbá people struggle to believe or even respectfully examine their own creation story?

This is not an attempt to insult, challenge or disrespect anyone’s religion. It is a Yorùbá heritage conversation created to examine what our ancestors recorded, what we were taught, what we now believe and how we interpret the Odùduwà story in the modern world.

Do you understand the heavenly chain literally, spiritually or symbolically? Do you believe the story as it was narrated, or do you consider it an account carrying a deeper historical meaning?

A CHAT INSIGHT WITH IFAGBENUSOLA OWOMIDE POPOOLA

Why do we call one people’s spirituality “religion” but dismiss our own indigenous practices as “superstition”?

When spiritual experiences occur in foreign traditions, many Nigerians accept them as miracles, divine encounters or sacred mysteries. Yet when similar experiences happen within Ìṣẹ̀ṣe, Ifá and other African spiritual traditions, they are quickly labelled fetish, primitive or unreal.

Why is foreign spirituality treated as legitimate while the wisdom inherited from our own ancestors must constantly defend its right to exist?

Perhaps the real question is not whether African spirituality is valid, but who taught us to doubt our own.

Who is fooling who?
