PAPER BANNER MAKING: Transforming Waste into Stories

A creative, fun, hands-on workshop where participants transform everyday packaging and reclaimed materials into colourful decorative banners inspired by Brazilian popular traditions. Each participant is encouraged to create a unique banner that reflects their own interests, memories, culture, family or imagination. Through collage, construction and assemblage techniques, discarded materials are transformed into meaningful artworks.

Who's this for? Everyone (18+)

Pá.ú.lú is a Brazilian-born visual artist based in the UK whose practice explores identity, memory and cultural heritage through assemblage, paper art and interactive publications inspired by popular traditions.

Opening our pre-carnival set with a song from my dear Dahomey ❤️
Notting Hill Carnival is so much more than a party/festival in the street…it’s 60 years of black resistance, cultural rejoicing, community and celebration!
See you all tomorrow morning at the Family Day parade!

Thank you Dendê family!
Thanks @pa.u.lu for capturing this special moment 🙏🏾

♻️🥁 FROM RIO TO NOTTING HILL — THE CYCLE CONTINUES!

For the 4th consecutive year, Dendê’s costumes are being created through an upcycling process that gives previous Carnival materials another life.
This year, we are combining costumes & components upcycled across the previous three years with an additional 70kg brought directly from Sustenta Carnaval’s 2026 Rio Carnival collection, materials diverted from landfill after the parades and now transformed for a new chapter on the streets of London.

🌱 WHAT DOES 70KG OF REUSE MEAN?
Based on @sustentacarnaval mitigation indicator of 1kg reused = approximately 47.2kg CO₂e mitigated, these 70kg represent approximately:
♻️ 3,304kg CO₂e of potential impact mitigated

That is comparable to:
🚗 ≈22,000 km driven in a typical medium-sized petrol car*
Because 3,304 kg CO₂e ÷ 0.15 kg CO₂e/km ≈ 22,027 km.
Based on an illustrative emissions factor of 150g CO₂e/km; actual emissions vary by vehicle, fuel and driving conditions.

And that is just the 70kg added this year — before counting the materials that have already been reused and transformed across our previous three Carnival editions.
Instead of becoming waste, these materials keep moving:
Rio Carnival → collection → triage → UK → creative transformation → Notting Hill Carnival → reuse again.

Circularity becomes tangible when materials stay in the cycle, reducing demand for new resources while carrying forward craftsmanship, cultural memory & creativity.

A huge thank you to @jean_rj , for making sure the triage & packing in Rio ran smoothly; Manuela, for bringing the materials over; and @pa.u.lu , for the hands-on assistance transforming them into this year’s costumes. 💚

🔥 AND THESE ARE OUR 2026 COSTUMES!
🥁 DRUMMERS — REGISTRATION DEADLINE: SATURDAY 15 AUGUST
We are producing only 80 costumes and are quickly approaching capacity. We need enough time to complete the making process, so register now.

💃🏾 DANCERS — only a few spaces remain too!
Join us at @nhcarnivalldn 2026 and become part of a Carnival where ancestry, creativity & circularity move together.

This is @pa.u.lu ‘s #reusestory 💚

Meet Paulo Vitor - a Brazilian-born visual artist based in the UK, working with assemblage, mixed media, and found objects. His work brings together personal stories of migration, memory, and belonging, often shaped by the visual language of Brazilian Carnival. Using discarded and weathered materials, he creates pieces that carry both history and transformation.

On Carnival & connection
“I’ve been drawn to Carnival in my work since 2014. It’s a way for me to stay connected to my roots, but also to think about how we come together collectively. There’s something powerful in that shared energy - the mix of celebration, memory, and even loss.”

Why banners?
“Banners hold so much more than imagery. Across history, they’ve carried identity, devotion, and belonging - from processions to parades. For me, they act almost like emotional containers, holding fragmented identities and cultural memory.”

Working with reclaimed materials
“I’m interested in materials that already have a life - things that are worn, overlooked, or discarded. Their textures, their imperfections… they tell stories. Using them is a way of resisting this idea that everything needs to be new or polished.”

On transformation
“There’s a tension I’m always exploring - between permanence and fragility, belonging and displacement. Reworking these materials, and even the form of the banner itself, becomes a way to question what we hold onto, and how things change over time.”

Finding Renee
“I recently came across Renée Materials during a Uni talk, and the mission instantly resonated. Creating a circular ecosystem for materials and creatives feels very aligned with how I think and work.”

Happy Earth 🌍 Week to you all!

UAL Sustainability ♻️ Alumni Network – Meet up – Tate Modern – Tracey Emin ‘A Second Life’ - With Lukas Kroulik from UAL Sustainability Alumni Network, 17th April 2026

This photo, taken last Friday night in front of the Tate Modern @tate captures that moment. We’re standing in front of Tracey Emin’s @traceyeminstudio outdoor sculpture, which is absolutely worth seeing—freely accessible and beautifully situated.

I’ve put together five simple questions to help guide a follow-up conversation. Anushka and Paulo were truly fascinating to speak with, and I believe they would make a valuable addition to the Sustainability Alumni Network @ual_alumni

1. What emotions do you think the artist is trying to express in her work?
2. Which artwork stood out to you the most, and why?
3. Why do you think Tracey Emin often uses personal experiences in her art?
4. Do you find her work easy to understand, or does it feel more open to interpretation?
5. How could contemporary art like this connect to ideas about sustainability or our impact on the world?

For Question 2, we each selected an image that stood out to us, in this order: Lukas, Anushka, and Paulo. To discover the stories behind our choices, keep an eye out for the next UAL newsletter ✉️
