It’s my birthday today, this year we’ve driven over 10,000 miles across Europe & the Americas while roadschooling our children in environments as varied & as beautiful as you would expect… yet it’s the human connections across the thousands of miles that have touched my heart the most. I have learnt so much about how I want to be as a human - share more and care more with as many people as possible.

We have another year ahead of us on the road… and I cannot wait! @packlightlyandgo

And remember what our friend @ornamentalconifer said THINGS WON’T CHANGE UNTIL WE DO.

48 hrs in LA with @ornamentalconifer

12 years ago Nico (the artist known as @ornamentalconifer ) painted a sign in our yard - and looking back, what he wrote has been @packlightlyandgo & my maxim for life. (last slide)

This week Nico shared his time and infinite talent with us again, this time inspiring our children as well... and hopefully anyone we drive past on our way down to Argentina. #worldwideoptimism #hope #thingswontchangeuntilwedo

Thanks pal #ornamentalconifer

Some people thought I was mad to sell our house, most of our stuff and move into a truck with my partner, two kids and two dogs. What about everything you’ve been working towards here and how will you make art on the road? I didn’t have an answer for those questions but I knew that this was an opportunity to expand myself, my art and my family.

Surprisingly the travelling days are the most still moments while living on the road, I thought I would be able to sketch sitting in the passenger seat but even writing in my journal is hard as this 1983 truck bounces along. There is no opportunity to sit and paint when we park up, there are only unexpected snippets of time to myself - on the banks of a river or an early morning before the family wakes, and sewing is a practise I have always found you can pick up where you left off with immediate effect.

As we travel I pick up small pieces of fabric from different states and stitch them together, building a new grid to lay on the land - part of the ongoing series, Bound Together. Like that of a quadrat, the laid grid brings to attention the smallest portions of earth - we’ve covered nearly 3000 miles of varied landscapes and climates in the last 3 months, with over 7000 miles more to go.

When we stay somewhere for more than a couple of days I’ve found I’ve been able to make small wall sculptures, two shown at @sohorevue with @binderofwomen_ last month and two to be shown at @sidebitch_la - this current living situation has forced me to reconsider size, thinking again about the many ideas of ‘smaller’.

I don’t have any conclusions as we’re really only at the beginning of our travels but everything I was working toward back home still feels present, and I’ve found a way to continue making work on the road while also being on an all encompassing family journey.

(due to the very outdoors lifestyle, I am also always stitching up the kids torn clothes)

Only a handful of days on the road… left our pals @clemmiedeblank & @christopherchezchappell in NJ and have begun the slow, winding drift through the Catskills towards @mamafrancesca in VT - trying not to drive more than a couple of hours a day.

The cold is sharper than we expected but the landscape even more beautiful, tomorrow to the artist Thomas Cole’s house/museum - which some say is the birthplace of modern America landscape art.

Countless games of Monopoly deal c/o @isabellarogge and the roadside diners delivering every dish we’ve looked forward to - only until we get back into the swing of van living/cooking. Always looking for free camp spots so we have more 💵 to spend on stickers!
