The Fourth of July was always your favorite weekend of the year.

You would have loved that it fell on a long weekend this year. I can picture it so clearly… you making your famous ribs, getting the pool ready, texting friends, setting up chairs in the driveway, and staying outside until way too late watching the kids run around with sparklers.

You loved everything about this weekend.

I’ve already walked through so many hard firsts without you—my birthday, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day—and somehow this one hit me differently.

Yesterday, I could barely drive to the party we’ve gone to for years. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to go. It wasn’t because I was scared.

It was because reality punched me in the face all over again.

You’re really not going to be there.

I hadn’t felt that kind of panic in a long time. The tears just kept coming. But good friends got me through those doors, and I’m so thankful they did.

Because once we got there, me and Ava had such a beautiful night.

Watching her laugh and run around with the other kids, seeing her so vibrant and happy… it did something to my heart. She carries a strength that amazes me every single day. More than once, she looked at me and said, “It’s going to be okay, Mom. It’s going to be okay.”

And somehow, I believed her.

I’m so glad we didn’t let grief keep us home. Even when reality was hitting us hard… even when our hearts were aching for our number one guy… we still showed up.

That’s what grief is, I think.

Learning how to carry heartbreak and beautiful moments in the very same hand.

Missing you terribly while still finding reasons to smile.

And last night, I know you would have loved every second of it.

What I wish I could explain about losing my husband so young…

No one prepares you for how much of your life was intertwined with one person.

You don’t just lose your husband.

You lose the person who knew your routines.
The person who shared your memories.
The person you planned your future with.

You lose the one person who made ordinary moments feel like home.

I miss the random conversations.
I miss saying, “You’ll never believe what happened today.”
I miss sitting at a dinner table for hours talking about absolutely nothing and everything at the same time.

I miss having my person.

Losing your spouse young isn’t just about learning how to live without them.

It’s learning how to carry a love that still exists, even though the person you love is no longer here.

And some days, that’s beautiful.

Some days, it’s unbearable.

Most days, it’s both.

So if you’ve ever wondered what losing your husband so young feels like…

It feels like loving someone with your whole heart and having nowhere left to put that love except to carry it with you.

Forever. 💜

What if your grief was a gift?

I’m in Chattanooga this weekend, taking care of my mom. She’s been in hospice for 13 months now. And I still wake up with grief every single day.

There’s a name for it… anticipatory grief. Grieving someone while they’re still here. If you’ve never heard of it, look it up. It might explain something you’ve been feeling and couldn’t name.

It brings up the loss of my father. The loss of our unborn child. The big questions about my purpose here.

But it’s also given me more clarity than I’ve ever had.

To keep telling my story. To keep sharing my feelings. And to show other men how to do the same.

So if you’re grieving… if you need someone to talk to, to help you understand it, to just sit with you in it… reach out to me. This is what I do. And I’d be honored to get on a call with you.

In case no one told you they love you today, dude…

I love you. And your grief is a gift. 🙏

“She’s an angel I’ve held close to my heart ever since then.”

In April of 1991, Jim Katona lost his daughter, Gabrielle Michelle, during delivery to umbilical strangulation.

The grief didn’t just break his heart… it broke his marriage.

And in the middle of it, people kept trying to help with words that did the opposite. As Jim shared:

“I learned a lot when Gabrielle passed about what not to say to people who lost a child because of what other people were saying to me, thinking they were saying something helpful… things like, well, you got two healthy kids and you’re both young enough, you can have another child.”

He did have another child. And in his words… “that doesn’t replace the pain and grief in the loss of Gabrielle.”

Today, Jim is an official grief educator. But he doesn’t call himself a teacher:

“I see myself as someone who shares my story and allows other people an opportunity to share their story, so we can all learn and share and grow together.”

The biggest thing he’s learned about grief?

It’s different for everybody.

You were never meant to do this alone.

Every dude deserves support. 🤙

Soundtracking this one with “Eye of the Tiger”…maybe a cheesy choice (but also I love it, so whatevs) - but also completely accurate track. 🐯
I know I’ve been quiet. Omg I appreciate the check ins! Thank you friends, I am well. There just haven’t been enough hours in the day lately…for a good reason.

Big Pathpal update coming very soon. Buckle up. 👀

A beta tester sent me a message yesterday and I sat in my car in the Hyvee parking lot for twenty minutes before I could go inside.

She told me she'd recorded her grandmother the last month on OpenWhen (thankful for our beta testers!) Just one recording, sitting at her grandmother's kitchen table on a Saturday afternoon, asking her to tell stories about being seven years old.

Forty-five minutes long, nothing rehearsed. Her grandmother laughed at her own jokes the way she always did.

Her grandmother died on last week.

This is the message that's been making me cry for two days.

The loss is real, and I'm sitting with her family in it. But what I can't stop thinking about is the recording, her grandmother's voice asking what she made for lunch, the laugh nobody knew was the last one.

I keep thinking about the version of her sitting at that table on Saturday with her phone propped against the salt shaker. She didn't know what was coming. Neither did her grandmother. Just two people in a kitchen on a Saturday, and one of them pressed record.

That's the space OpenWhen lives in, the space between last month and this month, where you don't know how much time you have and you press record anyway.

If you've been thinking "someday," someday isn't always there. The recording you make on a Saturday isn't a goodbye, it's the part of them you get to keep.

OpenWhen exists for the families who know what it feels like to reach for a voice that isn't there anymore. Our platform lets you record messages and videos for your loved ones and deliver them exactly when they need them most.

To the woman who sent me that message — thank you. To the rest of you, we're looking for more beta testers for our app, DM LEGACY to test it today. 🤍

What stays with us isn’t the run of show. It’s the feeling in the room.

At TRIA, we’ve produced a lot of experiences — but the Pathpal Grief Summit was something different. You could sense it before the first speaker even began. There was a quiet understanding that this wasn’t a typical event.

It was a space people were walking into with their whole selves.

Yes, the conversations on stage were powerful — voices like Negin Chelehmalzadeh, Jess Sims, Rachel Giddings, and others who spoke with a level of honesty that doesn’t always have a place in public forums.

But what mattered just as much was everything happening off stage.

The pauses.
The shared glances.
The moments where no words were needed.
The closed eyes and open hearts during times of meditation.
The laughter - yes, laughter & joy can be found in grief.

As producers, we spend a lot of time thinking about flow, timing, visual design and attendee experience. But this reminded us that the most important thing we can create is permission — permission for people to feel, to connect, and with this event, to not have to carry things alone.

That’s the kind of space we’re committed to building.

To everyone who showed up with openness and trust — you shaped what this became and its future.

And to the founders of Pathpal, Negin and Jason, thank you for inviting us to support bringing your vision to life and being a part of something that truly matters.

We’ll carry this one with us for a long time. Because when you create space like this, it doesn’t just end when the room empties. It stays.

We are looking forward to a continued partnership with Pathpal and are excited for doing it all over again - this time in New York City, April 23-24, 2027. Save the date!

When April started I knew it would be a quiet month with travel plans. It turned out to be deliciously expansive and painfully resistant, both in life and business. Four takeaways — I hope it gives you permission to trust your own way:

1. Learning to trust yourself is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Not the expert, not the framework, not the process. Trust yourself.

2. Abundance is available to you like the air you breathe — and it becomes obvious when you train yourself to notice it.

3. You don't always get what you want but what you need to move to the next expanded version of yourself.

4. Many may not get your way. Trust your way anyways.

Here's to a good May — and to remembering that you are the main event.
