Last weekend, we headed to Gut Kerkow in the Uckermark, north of Berlin, to visit ‚After the City / Nach der Stadt‘. The exhibition took place at Spaced Out, a project on the farm run by entrepreneurs and collectors Christof and Jochen Beutgen in collaboration with PSM.

After an introduction by our hosts, head farmer Fabian Pruns shared Gut Kerkow’s approach to ecological farming. We met the animals, explored the vegetable garden, and enjoyed some refreshments before Philipp Lange took us on a tour of the exhibition he curated.

Bringing together more than 70 works by 18 artists, the group show explored the dynamics between urban and rural spaces, featuring several artists connected to our institution: Elmgreen & Dragset, Gianni Motti, Judith Hopf, and Daniel Gustav Cramer, who was part of the last Berlin Biennale.

Spread across the manor house, former granary, and garden the exhibition offered a wonderful setting for an afternoon on the countryside. Works by Louisa Clement and Spyros Rennt are still on view at Gut Kerkow’s shops in Mitte and Schöneberg, serving as satellite extensions of the exhibition.

Final days to see Dorian Sari’s work "untitled" in “After the City / Nach der Stadt” at Spaced Out – Gut Kerkow, on view through October 4.

Curated by Philipp Lange, the group exhibition brings together more than 50 works by 18 artists, exploring the relationship between urban and rural space as interconnected sites of longing, projection and retreat.

In “Ohne Titel” (“Untitled”), an elegant leather shoe lies on the floor, caught in a sticky mass of pink chewing gum. Its wearer is nowhere to be seen. The untied laces suggest a hurried departure, while the gum holds the shoe firmly in place, leaving the scene suspended between escape and restraint, movement and stillness. What at first appears to be an incidental encounter between two everyday objects opens onto questions of absence and agency, and of what makes us leave or holds us back.

FRIENDS TRIP TO LYON ☀️

The 18th Lyon Biennale opened this month, and we were lucky enough to join for the preview and opening days as part of a members’ trip. Curated by @catherinenichols567, the exhibition brings together 120 artists and spans 11 venues across the city, including @maclyon_officiel and @musee_des_tissus.

We shared many beautiful moments together: in the exhibition, during walks and rides between the different locations, or at the opening party. A great joy was to reconnect with artists whose work we know well from their projects at @berlinbiennale and @kwinstitutefcontemporaryart—among them @sarasejinchang_vanderheide and @germainekruip.

Beyond the Biennale, we had a wonderful conversation with Lyon-based artist @a_andradetudela in his studio, and a memorable visit to @couventdelatourette for a cocktail dinatoire with artist @lilianetomasko, who guided us through her solo show in Le Corbusier‘s brutalist architecture, together with curator @marjolaine.levy.

Last but not least, a dinner at Brasserie Georges was definitely a must!

Blue Zone

Shot on a smartphone, this journey into the past takes us onto the streets of Berlin, into Schmidt’s maisonette apartment, and into the conference room of a high-rise office.

Schmidt transforms these and other snapshots from the approximately ten-minute short film into a series of new, large-scale paintings. In the form of photographic prints on linen, the film stills serve as the ground for his characteristically impasto application of paint.

The resulting sense of vitality corresponds to the scenes depicted, which bear witness to the active negotiation of the self with its immediate and familiar surroundings. The urban environment, the park landscape, or the furnished room merge with depictions of the protagonist and those around him.

ERIK SCHMIDT
Blue Zone

Water lilies grow as long-lived, extensively branching rhizomes beneath the water, revealing only their blossoms and floating leaves at the surface. The exhibition Blue Zone, presenting Erik Schmidt’s latest body of work at Galerie Krinzinger, follows this logic of visibility and concealment within an extensive network.

Its starting point is his 2025 video work Rough Trade. In it, the artist himself takes on the role of protagonist, returning to selected places that once served as settings for his earlier films or resemble them. Shot on a smartphone, this journey into the past takes us onto the streets of Berlin, into Schmidt’s maisonette apartment, and into the conference room of a high-rise office. Finally, the artist literally enters the central image or self-portrait of the exhibition: a dinghy on a water-lily pond.

I remember first time working with Erik Schmidt at Krinzinger Schottenfeld on his „Re-Retreat“ Exhibition back in 2022, where we showed his incredibly beautiful palm paintings. He stayed in the residency apartment in the gallery building for like a week and it was a very fun time. Today he opened his fifth solo show at the Galerie Krinzinger „Blue Zone“, full of incredibly meditative oil paintings - urban impressions with nature breaking through. It’s really moving to see the work of an artist evolve over time. Make sure you have a look at the show if in Vienna, it’s on until October 15th 💖
