A closer look at the Combe Martin pool coming together.

Selecting the pool tile has been a very hands on process. Samples laid out, moved around, submerged in water, viewed in different light and compared against the surrounding materials time and time again.

A pool tile can look entirely different once underwater, so this is not a decision we make from a sample board alone. We consider how the colour shifts throughout the day, the tone it creates in the water and how it sits alongside the stone, planting and architecture.

The intention has always been for the pool to feel like a body of water within the garden, rather than a separate element.

A considered process, now coming to life tile by tile.

COMBE MARTIN | Pool Tile Installation.

I love watching the hands on side of the process. The care, patience and craftsmanship that goes into laying every single tile is incredible.

Working with Laguna Pools to bring this part of Combe Martin to life has been such a rewarding process, and seeing it at this stage makes me very excited for what is still to come.

A significant milestone at Marella, Hampton.

Michael Kark and Adam Slade-Jacobson joined @loweliving and the wider project team to celebrate the official topping out of this collection of 32, two and three-bedroom residences.

Developed and built by Lowe Living in collaboration with @cerastribley and @plume__studio, Marella brings together thoughtful design and a strong connection to its coastal setting.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing the project to this stage.

I am still on such a high from this day.

Seeing these beautiful established trees find their place around the pool has completely transformed the feeling of Combe Martin. The scale, the softness, the way they frame the architecture. Suddenly, the garden we have been imagining for so long is becoming a reality.

A few more moments from a very muddy, very cold, but incredibly special day.

COMBE MARTIN | Tree Day.

I don’t think I have ever been quite so happy on a building site.

The weather was absolutely brutal. Freezing cold, pouring rain, mud everywhere, and yet I could barely contain my excitement.

Walking onto site and seeing these magnificent trees arriving, watching the @wilmark.lc team carry them into position through the mud, was one of those moments I will never forget.

We have spent so long imagining how this garden would feel, how the trees would frame the house, soften the architecture and create these beautiful spaces around our home. And suddenly, standing there in the rain, I could see it all coming together.

There is something incredibly emotional about seeing a vision you have carried in your head for so long become a reality, especially when it is your own home.

I have such admiration for the incredible team at @wilmark.lc, who worked tirelessly in the most challenging conditions, and @plume__studio, whose beautiful vision for the landscape is finally taking shape.

I honestly didn’t want the day to end. Despite the cold, the rain and the mud, I was completely in my element.

One of my happiest days at Combe Martin so far.

Gardens Awakening.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love a garden. I am constantly thinking about the relationship between inside and out, and how the placement of a single tree or a beautiful outlook can completely transform the experience of a room.

We are constantly walking back inside the house, looking through windows and doorways, refining the placement of trees and planting to ensure every outlook feels considered. After all, we spend so much of our time indoors, and I love how a beautiful garden can become part of the interior experience.

Unlike an interior, a garden is never really finished. It grows, settles and evolves with the seasons, becoming more beautiful with time.

Perhaps that is what I love most. We can design every detail, but ultimately nature has the final say.

Coastal living, shaped by nature.

At Marella, landscape is an extension of the home. Designed by Plume Studio, lush planting flows through the outdoor spaces, creating a sense of calm, connection and retreat.

From long lunches in the afternoon sun to evenings gathered around the firepit, these spaces are designed to make outdoor living part of everyday.

In Melbourne, this residence unfolds through monumental volumes and a restrained palette of pale timber, travertine and plaster.

Contemporary art, sculptural furniture and objects bring moments of intensity to the calm, while deep green marble and reflective metal introduce a richer material tension.

For Combe Martin, the pool was never intended to feel like a standalone addition to the garden.

From the outset, our design intent has been for the pool to read more as a water feature within the landscape, with the architecture, planting and water working together as one composition.

Working closely with @laguna_pools and @plume__studio , we considered how the pool would be experienced from both inside and outside the home. Its position, proportions, materiality and relationship to the surrounding garden have all been carefully resolved to create a sense of permanence.

The landscaping will soften the architecture, while the pool introduces another layer of reflection, movement and depth.

It is this dialogue between architecture and landscape that we hope will make the finished space feel as though it has always belonged at Combe Martin.

Combe Martin has always been a very personal project for me. It’s my home, but it has also become a place to explore ideas, test boundaries and bring together people whose approach to design I really admire.

In this first conversation, I sit down with the teams from @laguna_pools and @plume__studio to talk about the history of Combe Martin, what makes this home so special and the thinking behind the next chapter of its landscape.

The Interwar architecture of the home has been an important reference throughout. During this period, gardens were considered spaces in their own right, designed as an extension of the architecture and an important part of how a home was experienced.

That relationship between house and garden is something we wanted to honour at Combe Martin, while interpreting it in a way that feels relevant to how we live today.

For me, the best projects come from genuine collaboration. When interiors, architecture and landscape are considered together, each discipline has the opportunity to inform the other and create something far more resolved.

This is the first in a series of conversations exploring that process and the people behind it.
