Year 1 as a Longhorn is done! ✅

I’m grateful for the grades I earned while maintaining STR Superhost status (without a housekeeper, until now!), making the path toward home-ownership simple for very deserving individuals and families, upgrading my car, and staying connected to community and love in my life (and more 🤪).

Returning to undergrad in this chapter of life? 😅 None of this is possible without the care and support of community, a good head on my shoulders, and a dream-driven heart. 💕

a few dispatches from a week that started in marfa and ended in chicago…

things are pretty bad out there but i still love art history and my job and my colleagues/mentors/friends (select all that apply).

thinking about the ungovernable line, the line as edge, boundary, concept, permeable and impermeable, which is to say of course NO WALL IN THE BIG BEND!!!!

UT President Jim Davis announced
on Feb 12th that UT @utaustintx is consolidating the departments of American Studies, African and African Diaspora Studies, Mexican American and Latino Studies and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies into the “Department of Social and Cultural Analysis”.

This means that each department will soon cease to exist independently and their faculty and students will be devastatingly cut and compromised. The years of dedicated and invaluable work by so many for decades will be disregarded and buried.

UT is clumping these departments together to disempower and repress their specificity and silence their voices of scholarship. It’s a gutting.

This news holds alarming consequences for the Art Galleries at Black Studies (AGBS) @galleriesatut, lead by Cherise Smith @profcsmith and Phillip Townsend @philntheblank who have given their hearts, expertise and lives to building an extraordinarily superb arts and education program that Austin cannot afford to lose.

For more details about the UT politics behind this merge, read this week’s Austin Chronicle @austinchronicle and decide your course of action; be it calls, letters, or joining efforts within our community to effectively challenge and disarm this insidious aggression.

The GBTS featured AGBS on December 3, 2024, which you can watch on our YouTube Channel.

I’m not going to gush my fury and anxiety as I trust our community gets the gravity of the situation.

All I can say is that the GBTS stands with AGBS and its founding department, its kindred Humanities departments at UT, and Cherise and Phillip. We see and love you.

Let’s raise our voices and exert what ever pressure we can access in support and demand for these irreplaceable treasures.

AGBS has done more for Austin’s art community, cultural fabric and its people than has been fully realized.

That you don’t know what you have until it’s gone is not the mirror we want to look into for all of us, future generations included.

In tribute to all the wonderful people the GBTS is grateful for, today’s gem among us is Dr. Cherise Smith: professor, scholar, writer & Founding Executive Director of the Art Galleries at Black Studies at UT. @profcsmith

She was on our 9th show, spotlighting @galleriesatut which aired on December 2, 2024 on our YouTube Channel. LIB. Watch it!

There’s something about Cherise that deeply moves me. Her fortitude, vision, mentorship, superb programming bringing great artists & scholars to Austin, & above all, her humility, respect & kindness with which she does it all, is the closest description I can come up with.

I gush. But I don’t care, because it’s true.

The community that Cherise has been central in galvanizing is crucial to the health, relevance & self-agency of Austin’s cultural fabric. Or, we could just say it’s about people, which means everything.

Universities & equity are under siege. Had to say it.

“Carrie Mae Weems: Something Grander Still”opens at AGBS January 30.

@carriemaeweems

Don’t miss it.

And say hi to Cherise. She’s a keeper.

Please follow & support AGBS. Their world-class programming is right in our front yard. And that matters.

More shining faces to come!

These 2 pics from the @utaustintx Celebration of Research were not playing nice with the others—IG was cropping some folks out—so they get their own post. Look at all this BEAUTY and BRILLIANCE. My people show up and OUT for me in good times and hard times. I’m so blessed and deeply thankful!
