Today’s episode features Anastasia “Sasha” Lesniewski, an aerospace engineering student at Purdue University pursuing a minor in Global Engineering Studies. After discovering aerospace through a TikTok rabbit hole in high school, Sasha turned her fascination with space into a path that took her from growing up in Guatemala to studying at Purdue, the “Cradle of Astronauts.”

From global engineering and hands-on design to mentorship and STEM education, Sasha is building a career in aerospace centered not only on exploring new frontiers, but also on creating opportunities for the people who will explore them next.

Congratulations! Assistant Professor Ziran Wang has received the NSF CAREER Award to Advance Human-Centered AI for Automated Vehicles. ✔️

Intern Spotlight: Saachi Tamboli
🎓 Purdue University — BS Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering, Minor in Physics, Class of 2027

Saachi is spending her summer with our Spacecraft Systems Engineering team, learning from engineers who build fully functional spacecraft buses with speed and precision. She’s excited to gain more hands‑on experience with system architecture and integration and to take on the challenges the team solves every day.

Saachi’s interest in aerospace started when she was eight, after learning that many astronauts began their careers in aerospace engineering. Studying at Purdue, the cradle of astronauts, has made that early dream even more meaningful. Over time, her passion has shifted from wanting to be in space herself to wanting to help design the systems and missions that make exploration possible.

After graduation, she hopes to continue working across the space industry, from satellites to human spaceflight, and contribute to missions that push human presence farther from Earth and expand what we know about the universe.

Researchers from Purdue University’s Davidson School of Chemical Engineering and Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering have found a way to divert spent lithium-ion battery materials from landfills — by mixing them directly into concrete.

The pilot study, published in CivilEng in January 2026, tested whether battery waste could serve as a partial replacement for sand in cement-mortar mixes, offering a low-energy alternative to conventional battery recycling methods while simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint of concrete production.

From #Purdue problem -solving to U.S. Mint policy, Mike Moran has built a career around seeing what small details reveal about large systems.

Moran helped advance legislation that authorized new Morgan and Peace silver dollars, advised on coin designs through the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and now supports engineering students through a study abroad scholarship meant to broaden the way they see the world.

Purdue research ‘clears the air’. ➡️ Purdue civil engineering professors Nusrat Jung and Brandon Boor are researching how daily habits may lead to the inhalation of nanoparticles indoors. Through their research, they study how outdoor air pollution, such as wildfire smoke, can be studied and mitigated through the use of filters in HVAC systems during air pollution events.

Cameron Vissers never stopped working while earning his Master's in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue. He was doing both at the same time.
As an aerospace engineer already deep in developmental work, he needed a program that fit his life, not the other way around. He did his homework, narrowed it down to two schools and ultimately chose Purdue. (He admits the basketball jersey had something to do with it.)

His biggest piece of advice for anyone considering the same path? Don't skip the refresher classes. Jump in too fast and you'll wish you'd taken that stats course first.
But here's what makes Cameron's story stand out: he didn't just earn a degree. He picked courses specifically because they applied to what he was already doing and he uses what he learned every single day.
