POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This was the first time exhibiting anything since my burnout after graduation. I thought I quit art forever, only to see my work at Tate Britain….This evening meant so much to me, thank you to all the beautiful people who came to support me, thank you @girlsinfilm_gif @tatecollective for the opportunity to exhibit my work, and most importantly to spread the message this image holds.

‘The Shapes We Are Given’ highlights communal intimacy within moments of political activism, showing acts of care which may appear juxtaposed given the circumstances. Face paint, usually tied to joy and childhood, appears here at a Palestine solidarity rally, becoming a marker of political belonging and shared identity. It becomes a reminder of how childhood is being reshaped by political urgency.

My image ‘The Shapes We Are Given’ was exhibited at Tate Britain last night, as part of the ‘Girls in Film x Tate Collective’ curation for the Lee Miller Late.

While I’m honoured to have been selected, I’m equally pleased that this image was given a platform to draw attention to human rights and the civilian cost of conflict, but also to the quiet acts of care that exist even amid violence.

I hope that in seeing this image, these conversations continue beyond the room.

Thank you to the beautiful people that came to support me last night.

VIOLA VAN DULLEMEN

‘As an Italian-Dutch artist, having grown up in London, India, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Manila, Hong Kong, and currently residing in Nottingham, Viola has had the privilege of constantly being surrounded by a spectacular variety of art.

Through integrating casting, moving image and ceramics, Viola has found her voice through the power to isolate each one of her memories and freeze them within sculptures.

With her choice of installation artwork, she encourages each one of her viewers to bask in the rawness and intimacy of her work.’

Photography of performance: Growing Pains (The Space Between 47 and 57)

Seven pairs of blue jeans, skirt hangers, broken clothes rail

It was a pleasure to document your work Liza! I would happily do this all over again. Got some behind the scenes shots in here too.

Viola and I were gushing over your performance - please do more :D

There were so many people's reactions that we both captured in our photos. Everyone was just so perplexed.🤨

Growing Pains (The Space Between 47 and 57)

Seven pairs of blue jeans, skirt hangers, broken clothes rail

Why do we keep clothes that not longer fit us? Why as women do we hate our bodies for having changed? Clinging to thoughts of one day being thinner.

Taking my jeans out for a shopping trip through the shopping centre of Nottingham, I felt the physical pain of my body struggling with the clothes rail over curbs, bumps on the pavement and navigating doors. The work left me tired, in pain and wrung out. Exhausted by the pressures I place on myself.

Viola van Dullemen
Untitled, 2021

Viola's work portrays a physical message regarding her constant struggle with moving. To her, it felt like she was always packing and unpacking before getting a real chance to settle in and feel at home. For this piece, Viola chose artefacts that she's collected over the years from the multiple places she's lived in. These objects are of great importance to her, as they all hold memories of her past, and represent all the cultures and experiences that Viola feels lucky to have experienced.

Viola van Dullemen
‘Untitled’ 2020

Viola often struggles to answer the question “where are you from” due to having moved so much in her childhood and experiencing huge culture shocks.

Throughout her life she found that the best way to help her navigate situations was to present them through charts, mind maps and lists, as she could take a step back and analyse everything from a different perspective.

Within this piece she has created a mind map, almost as if she is figuring the answer out as she creates her work. Although it is unfinished, the viewers are already able to see an insight on Viola’s childhood travels.
