Thrissur Kummati is a colorful folk art and mask dance form of Kerala, mainly performed during the festival of Onam in Thrissur district. Here’s a brief about it: 📌 Key Highlights of Thrissur Kummati Where it’s performed: Thrissur city and nearby regions in central Kerala. Occasion: Mostly during Onam, especially on Thiruvonam day. Form of Art: It is a mask dance (Kummatikali) performed by local troupes who go around streets, homes, and temples. 🎭 Features of Kummati Masks: Performers wear colorful wooden masks depicting characters from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and local folk legends. Costume: Dress is made from grass, leaves, and cloth. A distinctive Kummati attire is made of fresh grass tied around the waist. Music & Dance: They dance to the rhythm of Kummati Kol (a bamboo instrument with metal rings) and small drums. The steps are lively and accompanied by comic gestures. Characters: Common depictions include Narasimha (Vishnu’s avatar), Krishna, Shiva, Darika, and local folk heroes. Community Participation: Artists go from house to house performing; households give small offerings in return. It is both entertainment and a form of devotional folk expression. 🌸 Cultural Importance Adds to the festive mood of Onam. Blends Hindu mythology, folk traditions, and rural creativity. Strongly associated with Thrissur’s cultural identity, often called the “cultural capital of Kerala.” 👉 In short, Thrissur Kummati is a vibrant street performance with masks, music, and dance, keeping alive Kerala’s folk heritage during Onam.
