THE AESTHETIC OF LABOUR | 2024
Rainer Prohaska, MuseumsQuartier Wien, AT
____________________________________
EN
Over the period of seven days, a constantly changing sculptural installation took shape on the grounds of the MuseumsQuartier. Together with his team and visitors, Rainer Prohaska repeatedly rearranged several hundred yellow VT20 formwork beams.
By carrying, lifting, stacking, and reconfiguring them—without the use of any electrical equipment—changing sculptural formations emerged.
The focus was not on the resulting artwork, but rather on the collaborative working process, experimentation, and cooperation.
All components came from an existing pool of materials and were returned for further reuse after the project ended.

“Città Dei Vettura Fantastico” is an artists’ village conceived as a reuse experiment. It is based on converted, decommissioned passenger vehicles, such as tour buses, public buses, and RVs. These vehicles are transformed into mobile living and workspaces for artists.
Thanks to their design, which uses wheels as “stilts,” the units provide living spaces of up to 60 square meters—for example, in the case of a double-decker bus—while minimizing land sealing to just 1.5 square meters per vehicle. The living space created in this way stands in a deliberate disproportion to the actual area occupied and serves as a spatial and ecological framework for alternative models of living and working together.

Heading to Alpbach this summer? We are too!
At the European Forum Alpbach 2026, we’ll explore the big challenges and opportunities shaping Europe’s future under the theme “How Europe Wins”.
We’re looking forward to encounters and conversations that will challenge assumptions and broaden perspectives – and that naturally emerge on hikes, on stage, or over coffee.
If you’re also attending, let’s connect!
One walk we’re especially looking forward to?

A Stroll with @rainer_prohaska , founder of @futurama.laboratory , through Alpbach:
Exploring how Art Can Create “Good Places”
Through an on-site analysis in Alpbach and concrete examples taken from his own work, he examines how art can operate at the intersection of public space, community, and spatial quality. The walk poses the question of how art might serve as an experimental instrument for testing and establishing such places over the long term, and simultaneously acts as an announcement for a more extensive seminar being developed for EFA27.

Wednesday, 02. September
3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Meeting Point: Congress Centrum Alpbach - Hike Start 1 | CCA Square

EUROPEAN FORUM ALPBACH 2026
@forumalpbach

Art & Third Places: A Stroll through Alpbach Exploring how Art Can Create “Good Places

TRANSFORMATOR is an art intervention and a material experiment in the public space of @forumalpbach . An existing living container becomes a “magnet for materials and objects”—a place where people can let go of material possessions, question their habits, and reflect on their consumption patterns.

As a visible symbol of reduction, degrowth, and transformation, the container will be wrapped in ratchet straps during the first phase. These not only alter its appearance but will also take on an additional function next year.

How the intervention will continue at the @forumalpbach 2027 will be announced at the end of the 2026 Forum.

Rainer Prohaska: „Wie Lego ohne Bauplan“
Intermezzo – Künstlerinnen und Künstler im Gespräch
Der Künstler Rainer Prohaska zu Gast bei Anna Soucek.

Gestaltung: Anna Soucek

Thank you for joining us last week at the opening of our walk-in installation in the park of the Otto Wagner Areal.

-----

Created from reclaimed materials, the installation consisted of imaginative structures positioned between treehouses, bird nests and architectural sculptures. Inspired by the building practices of nature and the improvised logics of everyday life, the work explores questions of coexistence, building, and the appropriation of space.

CASA [SENZA] ALBERI . NIDO [SENZA] UCCELLI transformed the green area surrounding Pavilion 21 into a new gathering place at the Otto Wagner Areal, located at the intersection of the city and the Wiener Wald.

The installation was developed in collaboration between @rainer_prohaska, @kollektiv_kaorle and FUTURAMA°LAB.
