falling faintly faintly falling @finchcafe.e8 hosted by @theycometheysittheygo and Munir of Finch Cafe. A postcard project involving an exchange of artist postcards between Belinda Worsley and so far over 60 artists internationally. The inspiration for the title of the project and the show is the final passage of The Dead by James Joyce. ( see next post) And it will travel to Dublin later this year under the wing of falling faintly faintly falling partner @carolinemccambridge who also co- curated the London show. ❄️❄️❄️❄️

Robert Moon at 4 Garden Walk
I am way behind on posting about exhibitions I’ve seen recently but am posting this one ahead of others because it’s only on till Monday and well worth seeing. These works by Robert Moon are an exploration of canvas as a woven fabric with a warp and weft: the canvas distorts when cut, creating beautiful shapes, but can also itself be cut into strips to be woven into new surfaces. I love the purity of the all-white works, the understated drama of the black canvas. My favourite work was the one with a grey background (I don’t have the title to hand, will add later!): I love the shell-like quality of the white outer layer and soft pink inner layer of the shapes curved on the grey background. There’s a rug made from antique rug fragments, and actual wool pieces handwoven by the artist on a loom he built himself. An exhibition leaflet provides the artist’s reflections on his works - lovely to read. A meditative, serene series.
Last two photos by the artist, the rest mine. @robertmoonstudio

Included in current issue is Robert Moon - Maquette. Link in bio!

These selected works, each titled 'Maquette', a word also used for a sculptor's initial model, consider the possibilities for painting, and the space created by the work, opening up or being concealed by additional layers.

Issue 15, Summer 2023: “Escaping the Frame: Conversations in Paint” explores painting becoming less fixed within its own physical and material limitations, bringing together diverse disciplines and approaches. The issue reflects paint as a material, paint as a language, paint as an action and object. Contributions engage with the space of canvas, page and stage, considering the basis of painting, painting itself, responses to painting.

It’s out! Delighted to announce our summer Issue 15: Escaping the Frame: Conversations in Paint. View at link in bio 🔗✨

“Painting remains a viable and vital practice for 21st century artists partly through its capacity to remind us of the materiality of our world and the sensual qualities of our engagement with it, in the face of technologies that increasingly tend to emphasise the immaterial.

“As our title implies, contemporary painting has become less fixed within its own physical and material limitations, so the contributions to this issue are expansive. They bring collage, photography, installation, digital media, textual critique, and poetic writing into dialogue with the practice of painting.”

The issue includes our usual exhibition features on recent exhibitions by Basil Beattie at Hales Gallery London @halesgallery and Maria Stangret at CRICOTEKA Krakow @cricoteka. We also feature a recent symposium in Seoul, Korea that considered painting in relation to digital reproduction technologies. Contributors to Issue 15 are:

Stella Baraklianou @stellabarak, Basil Beattie #basilbeattie, Lisa Denyer @ldenyer, Jeff Gibbons @jeffgibbons_studio, Adam Gillam @adamgillamartist, Marianne Hendriks @mariannehendriksart, Dale Holmes @_dc_ho_lm_es_, James Merrigan @smallnightprojects, Robert Moon @robertmoon_, David R Newton @newtondavidr, Tom Palin @palin.tom, Susan Phillips @susanphillipssculpture, Phil Sawdon #philsawdon, Maria Stangret #mariastangret, Cora Weiss @weiss.cora, and Grace White @gracealtheawhite, with additional texts by our editors, Gertrude Gibbons @gertrudelmgibbons and Derek Horton @derekhorton_leeds.
