SHOP MANAGER SOPHIE SAYS WE NEED A NEW SKATEPARK ON STATEN ISLAND 🚨✊🏾

We will be hosting a meeting really soon to discuss the design. Who’s pulling up?

When Richmond Hood Company first opened, its Staten Island-centric merchandise was met with skepticism. “So many people found it to be out of place,” Tariq, the founder, recalls. “Like Staten Island, who's buying a Staten Island shirt? Staten Island hat. I'm not wearing a Staten Island hat.”

But the shop helped turn that skepticism into pride. “We're going on 19 years of being in business as a local skate shop, retail boutique,” Tariq says. “...we wanted to bring some of that [prideful] energy to Staten Island.”

That identity is part of what makes the borough feel different to the people who call it home. Tariq expresses, “We're the hidden borough….when you think of New York City, you know it's five boroughs. So they mention us last. Oh, and Staten Island. Yeah. But we're just, we here. Yeah. We ain't forgotten. We're just hidden.”

For Rojas, an employee at the shop, that sense of belonging is something Richmond Hood embodies. “Richmond Hood is my home. I think it's been a home for me forever. I've moved [to] so many different places. This is the only constant.”

Matt, another employee, describes a place where “homies will pull up. Customers will pull up. It'll be just people chilling, people coming through [to] get what they get. Sometimes they chill.” Eli, his coworker, agrees: “Everyone's family here.”

The shop's impact, however, didn't happen right away. “I think people need to appreciate the work that went into, like, making that happen,” Rojas says. “That did not happen overnight. It took years to build.”
Today, Tariq describes Richmond Hood as “the local skate shop... the local lifestyle boutique... the cultural meeting hub of the community."

For the people inside it, that community is as important as the skating itself. “But, like, to just be able to come chill and hang with the homies for a bit and have that safe space to do so, it's valued,” Matt says.
And for Rojas, supporting the shop means supporting something bigger: “investing into Richmond Hood is investing into the community.”
