「Root House by Gēn Root House by Gēn

Madder roots for @roothousebygen Beneath the soil, roots grow quietly, anchoring a plant before anything becomes visible above the ground Before a meal reaches the table, there are roots, ingredients, the land and the hands that bring everything together The natural dye hanging piece becomes a gentle reminder of where things begin, and of the beautiful unseen connections that nourish us In a space where food brings people together, this piece is a small reminder of our connection to the earth, from the roots beneath the soil to the things we share at the table A little tone, rooted in nature hand-dyed @sputnikforest 📸 @sputnikforest

Honoured to serve as an Asia Taste Advisor for the @chineserestaurantawards 2026, a programme founded in Vancouver in 2008 that has grown into a celebration of Chinese cuisine and the people behind it across Canada, the United States and Asia. As a Malaysian Chinese of Cantonese and Hokkien descent, I grew up with this food at the family table, and seeing it celebrated on this stage is more than I ever imagined. Representing Malaysia, this year’s Top 50 Honourees include Restaurant Shu, Xip Wah Lau and Yun House among the Elite 25, alongside Fifty Tales, Gerai Makanan Sai Kee, Hai Kah Lang, Peng Chu, Roothouse by Gen and The Teochew Club among the Essential 25. Swipe for the full list.

Every Chinese family in Malaysia has a dish that tastes like home, but "home" means something different in every dialect. At Root House by gēn, Chef Johnson Wong traces how those recipes changed when they reached Malaysian soil, and what local produce did to them. Hakka lei cha, Fuzhou red wine chicken, Hokkien cheong fun, each one a small history lesson you can eat. We came for dinner and left with a new way of seeing food we thought we knew. 📍 @roothousebygen Penang #RootHouseByGen #JJinPenang #PenangBestEats #PenangFood #PenangRestaurant
