still drifting through the sweetness of the opening reception of The Unbuilding Archive. Working on this exhibition the past many months has been such an honor, and its gifted me a sense of time past present and future that i am moving with, slowly and with purpose. thank you to my wonderful co-curator @kchandra who inspires me daily, and reminds me to dream, and to be curious and ferocious. Thank you to @turkxtaylor for holding down the work of liberating this building with integrity and care.

The vanguard, who picketed compton’s cafeteria prior to the riot, once held their headquarters in the upstairs back office of 80 turk st, the gayety at the time(1967). i carry their spirit with me.

The exhibition, The Unbuilding Archive: Liberated Futures for the Site of Compton’s Cafeteria Riot will be up at the public library at civic center until October 22. free to the public whenever the library is open.

thank u @gizzeh for capturing me in facilitator mode

Announcing “The Unbuilding Archive: Liberated Futures for the Site of Compton’s Cafeteria Riot”, an exhibition at the SF Public Library to commemorate the 60 year anniversary of the riot.

Please join us for the reception on June 4 from 6 to 7:30pm at the James C. Hormel LGBTQIA+ Center, located on the third floor of the SF Public Library at Civic Center.

The 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot was the earliest well-documented militant act of resistance by trans and queer people against police violence. Today, that same building at 101-121 Taylor Street is occupied by GEO Group, the largest private prison corporation in the country and main contractor with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

During the reception, TurkxTaylor Initiative co-curators @kchandra and @ach_attackh, will introduce the exhibit and talk about how they unbuild carceral power through the archive, starting with the building’s current carceral occupation, tracing its transformation back to its construction in 1908, and grounding the work in the land itself by honoring the Ramaytush Ohlone stewardship. From that space, they will share the speculative process, explore the transecological framework, and conjure expansive visions of liberated futures at Compton’s.

On view June 4 through October 22, 2026.

Access Info: Grove Street Entrance features a ramp entrance, elevators within the library lead to 3rd floor. Chairs will be available in the center. TurkxTaylor requests all attendants to wear masks for the reception.

Title Sign Design: Christine Darnell Grayscale image of the site of Compton’s Cafeteria Riot superimposed onto a grayscale image of Rincon Hill from 1851, with the windows of the building floating amidst the landscape. The collaged building sits amidst a yellow 1851 map of the area, showing the topography and vegetation of the area. The neighbors, cars, and traffic signs around the building are superimposed on the map. This dress was meant to be a mardi gras dress with fringe feathers on each layer— but like many projects, it found its own path. Thanks, Rosie, for wearing it beautifully. I’m learning borrowing is the sweet spot between holding on and letting go.

Meet the QT Studios Steering Committee! 👋 This year, we’re exploring a transition to a cooperative model—where artists and organizers share ownership, power, and wealth. ✩ Tap the link in bio to learn how we're fighting for collective power. ✩

TurkxTaylor was the platform, but the rally wouldn’t have happened without all the organizers stepping up. Although there was a wish to do something immediately, the group of organizers also understood the need to build unity in the community, which takes time. The group is interested in building momentum towards TDOV (or TDOP Trans Day Of Power?) Monday, March 31st.
Thank you to the organizers, to the MC, the speakers, the musicians, sound folks, chants, safety team, accessibility and ASL interpreters, poets, artists, sign-makers, zine-makers, gardeners, altaristas, fundraisers, admin people, and to everyone that showed up!!
