A world champs 🇬🇧 is about so much more than just the race….

Well that is probably what we tell ourselves when we maybe don’t have the race day we wanted…

But it’s all about the team….

The laughs…

The camaraderie….

The experience…

Embracing the moment….

Though if you manage to get onto the podium…..

That’s a pretty good outcome too!

@iau_ultrarunning 100 km World Championships in Ames 🇪🇸

Another World Championships behind me. It was an incredibly intense and demanding experience, but above all, a very valuable one.

At an event like this, my main responsibility is to focus on the tasks I have to complete with @ultrarunner_aleksandr_sorokin — preparation, race strategy, observing the race, reacting to the situation, and supporting the athlete when he needs it most. Every detail matters, and over 100 km you have to stay focused from the first kilometre to the very last.

But for me, championships are about much more than just work. Whenever I have some free time, I really enjoy talking to athletes and coaches from all over the world, exchanging experiences, observations and ideas. Every conversation gives me something new and allows me to see the sport from a different perspective. 🌍

I love 24-hour races and trail running, but the 100 km distance has something truly special about it. It reveals so much about a person — their preparation, character, patience and ability to deal with difficult moments.

What fascinates me most is watching athletes who, at some point, are no longer fighting only against the distance, but against their own weaknesses. When the body says “stop”, but the mind is still looking for a way forward. When pain, fatigue and doubt appear, yet they keep trying to achieve their goal and make their dream come true.

That is why I love sport. It is not always about the result, the medal or the record. Sometimes the greatest victory is simply refusing to give up and giving everything you have until the very end.

Thank you to everyone I had the chance to meet during these Championships — athletes, coaches, organisers and friends from all over the world. It was truly a special experience.

See you at the next Championships! 👊🌍

Alex Milne 🥉 World 100km Championships

Imagine averaging 18:53 for 5km, 20 times in a row 😮

That is effectively what Alex Milne did at the World 100km Championships, finishing in an astonishing 6:17:50 🥉

It is genuinely hard to get your head around. That is 6:04 per mile / 3:47 per km for more than six hours 🔨

What makes the performance even more impressive is Alex's consistency 📈

Our quarter-by-quarter analysis shows just how consistent Alex was across the full 100km. He covered the first 50km in 3:06:40, averaging 3:44/km, before running the second 50km in 3:11:10 at 3:49/km.

That is a slowdown of just 2.4% between the two halves of a 100km race!

We are incredibly proud to support Alex as he continues to establish himself among the very best ultra-endurance runners in the world.

And there was another interesting takeaway for us.
At least four men in the top 25 that we know of used BICARRB.

Sodium bicarbonate is best known for shorter, high-intensity events, but performances like these show its potential role in ultra endurance racing too.

🥉 World 100km bronze
⏱️ 6:17:50
⚡ 3:47/km average pace

Some performance Alex, mate!

In this week's piece we sat down with 2:11 man and World 50km Champion, Alex Milne.

Milne's rise from two failed sub-three attempts to a European record holder is a lesson in leaning into your weaknesses, learning from disappointments and mercilessly marching on.

I think anyone at any level can take something away from Milne's journey, one that continues to be a big source of inspiration to clubmates and compatriots following along behind.

"Learn to lose, the 18 year making of Alex Milne" is out now, link in gjmallett bio.

Alex Milne | 4th at Comrades 🥣

5:22:29 for the Up Run at Comrades. That’s 3:46/km average pace, with an AVG GAP of 5:40/mile, for over 50 miles with 1743m of brutal climbing ⛰️

Madness!

Alex’s time was also inside the previous course record, showing just how impressive this run was, as the fastest Brit in history 🇬🇧

An unbelievable performance on one of the most iconic ultra-marathon stages in the world.

BREAKING ! World 50km champion Alex Milne finishes a superb 4th place at today’s Comrades marathon. Improving on his 9th place in 2024 and his 6 th place last year. Highest GB male finisher since Steve Way’s 3rd place in 2018(I think)
