“Theater of Dis-Operations (Act I. Disarmament)” identifies the activation of disarmament processes as the primary urgency of contemporary society, in a historical period where the normalization of violence, the increase in armed conflicts, and the rapid expansion of the global arms market and war industries are at the center of public debate. According to SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute @sipriorg), between 2014-18 and 2019-23, European states nearly doubled their arms imports (+94%).

Although there is a wide range of knowledge collected in dictionaries, glossaries, manuals, and cataloging structures that encompasses a vast series of violence devices, the concept of “weapon” here assumes a significantly broader meaning than commonly believed, reappearing in the form of devices, but also symbolic instruments and structures such as “state,” “flag,” and “nation.” [...] (from pr)

This summer, I wrote a text titled “Fire to the Stage!” for Sali&Tabacchi Journal Nº5 “La Via Del Fuoco”, delving into the role of fire as a symbol and transformative force in artistic practices, and its connection to radical political expression. It was supposed to be published alongside a series of images, that unfortunately didn’t see the light.

Here are some of these and an extract from the text

“Prelude: A Mass of Flames

Proposing a subversive approach as a method demands embracing diversity as a radical condition. Our relationship with the “totality” of things—or their presumed integrity, be it in development or historical-economic progress—often aligns with the notion of continuity, consistency, and the sequential association of one thing to another. Yet, the current state of affairs is marked by the continuity of destruction, abolition, and overcoming conditions that no longer meet the needs of a given moment or society. From these premises, we can assert that rupture is essential for abolishing certain conditions and that, within history, it has taken the form of various symbolic structures. However, none has surpassed the image of one in particular: fire.”

DISARMAMENT TECNIQUES

The curatorial collective Sa.turn emphasizes the urgent need to challenge the global military-industrial market through every available means. In their latest exhibition, Theater of Dis-Operations (Act I. A Disarmament), they expose the symbolic layers on which violence replicates itself and offer an inquiry into sabotage and protest, using art to dismantle the structures of war.

Many thanks to those who came on tuesday to see Theater of Dis-Operations (Act. II, Riot), curated by Sa.Turn platform with the fantastic live performance by Edo Caimi .

A number of films were also screened in the exhibition including A War Play , a fantastic film by Giulio Squillacciotti about the re-enactment of war and some films by artists in the exhibition such as Thiago Dezan, Gaia De Megni and Shadi Harouni

Many thanks also to Publishing Station for their audio contribution, recorded in a residency in Bethlehem - Soundscape as Resistance

Some pictures of the process behind the work “Flag”

This piece is made of 68 discarded bandsaw blades used by various suppliers such as metal workers, wood workers, butchers, and ice cutters. I’ve been collecting them over the past few months from different regions of Italy. The blades have been hand-woven and welded together, with efforts to maintain as much as possible their original conditions, including rust and scratches from use over time.

Shadi Harouni’s (Iran, 1985) work “Last Day of the Bombardments” is currently on view at the gallery in the group exhibition “Theatre of Dis-Operations”, conceived in collaboration with Sa.turn platform.

Harouni is a visual artist with a practice that ranges across modalities and media, from site-specific interventions and sculptures to film and photography. Her research focuses on marginalised and disregarded stories of dissent, especially in her ancestral Kurdistan, linking silent acts of personal resistance to global mass movements. Harouni’s work is rooted in spaces, objects and sentient subjects imbued with utopian dreams and unfulfilled promises of exoduses and revolutions. Her photographs and films made in cemeteries, mountain quarries, time-worn dwellings and abandoned factories throughout Iranian Kurdistan look to the mountain and the monument, home and homeland as sites of remembrance and resistance, of despair and possibility.

Come visit our exhibition before our summer break closure starting on July 26.
