I spent 2 weeks in Madagascar to honeymoon with @hamiltonnguyen, chosen because we gave our wedding guests pushpins to vote via a map at our reception. Hamilton’s friends sent us to Madagascar.

Madagascar is one of the most challenging countries I’ve visited, but also rewarding. Relatively few tourists make it not only given the long flight(s), but the tough journey within the country. Madagascar has unimaginably bad roads. Even in the city, running water isn’t always available. Madagascar consistently ranks among the world’s poorest countries.

But it’s beautiful. Its national parks are barely touched, where it’s possible to go days without seeing another soul. Madagascar has huge potential, but unsustainable environmental practices put its future at risk.

I leave humbled and grateful for my time and luxuries like paved roads, refrigerators, water and clean energy. Some highlights:

1: Eating Zebu!

2: Hiking Andringitra National Park. Landscapes include a moonscape-like environment and granite towers.

3-5: Climbing Peak Boby pre-sunrise (Madagascar’s tallest climbable peak). The summit trek (2,658 meters) took 2.5 hours, necessitating a 2 a.m. wakeup for sunrise.

6: Camping. I spent 6 of 14 nights in tents, soaking in stars.

7-8: Enlisting local kids to build bridges, literally. Slats regularly fall out. The only way to cross by car is to bring your own wood to lay down drive over, then take back and use for the next bridge. Enterprising kids wait by damaged bridges to move wood (for a fee).

9-10: Swimming in Isalo’s mountain pools. Piscine Naturale was so beautiful it looked artificial — and no one else was there.

10. Swimming in a man-made pool at Isalo Ranch. Hotels feel especially nice after tents with no running water and electricity!

11. Buying soda from some kids and instantly recognizing it as soda served at Epcot’s soda taste area.

12. Wandering markets that draw people from miles (most people arrive on foot).

13-14. Hiking Isalo National Park.

15-16. Lemurs!

17. More zebu!

18. A final farewell song and dance.

19. Doing it with @hamiltonnguyen! An unforgettable adventure for our first year married!
