'Ronan Apcar Plays Dulcie Holland' is out today

after five or so tenacious years, I share with you all the first studio recording of Australia's own Dulcie Holland's masterpiece, 'Concertino for Piano and Strings' - written 43 years ago and virtually never heard until now

and actually the three pieces on this record are all premiere recordings! A fantastic short piece I found in the @nationallibraryaus archives, Dulcie's concertino, and @danielrojas_musico's 'La Gran Salsa' which he has rearranged/revised just for this project (thank you!!!)

how fortunate was i to have @sam_weller9 jump on board and bring along @ensembleapex who grace this album with some lush string orchestra moments! thank you to all who played with me and especially to Sam!!!!

I will leave you with a quote from Dulcie in 1975:

“...if there is a piece of music there… that someone can play, even if it is a child… then I haven't lived in vain”

It’s release day! My new nonet, The Dreaming, is inspired by the creation stories of Australian Aboriginals and was composed on my recent visit Down Under. It was an incredible gift to get a commission from Intercontinental Ensemble, a group of the most skilled and generous musicians that I’ve been a huge fan of! They say never meet your heroes but these guys are every bit the pleasure to work with behind the scenes as they are to admire from the audience. And on top of that they gave me my first ever opportunity to do a classical ensemble recording! The cherry on top of the icing on the cake was getting to work with Australia’s latest gift to the classical conductor’s podium, Sam Weller! And who better than my daughter Sophia to create the artwork of the Seven Sisters being chased into the sky? The results are available now on a streaming service near you! https://open.spotify.com/album/4lvp4IipeLYLzDwY3fiyMY?si=_UaUaHdzTLC4ID8tsHfU0w&utm_source=copy-link

Known as a leading figure in contemporary classical music, @brycedessner’s residency with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra is drawing to a powerful close.

Taking the stage as guitarist at City Recital Hall, these dynamic performances cover a specialised and highly praised suite of Dessner’s compositions from ‘Ayhem’ to ‘Impermanence’ 🎼

Joined by pianist @jambazianvatche and conductor @sam_weller9, don’t miss the final performance this evening at Melbourne Recital Centre ✨

Two sold-out Sydney shows. One packed Canberra show. And a whole lot of Steve Reich!

Thank you to everyone who came along to Reich: Rejoice: Repeat over the weekend. It was such a thrill to share this exhilarating, challenging and completely addictive music with you — and from the energy in the room, it seemed like you were having just as much fun as we were!

A special thank you to our brilliant guest artist Gabi Sultana, who travelled all the way from Malta to join us. Your performance was truly unforgettable. And thank you to Sam Weller and Richard Cilli for making the performances so special. We couldn’t have done it without you.

We’re already missing it. And yes, we’d happily do it all again. But for now, we hope to see you at our final performances for the year: Avant Gardens Spring, Ngarra Burria Gala, and Future Classics. Head to our website to find out more, link in bio.

Thank you to Oliver Miller for his fantastic photography of our Sydney concert.

Excerpt from Swarm (2025) for string orchestra.

This is the climax of the piece, where the music finally breaks after a long and controlled build. The moment is structured around an abrupt expansion and contraction (image 2). Here, every voice starts in unison, extends outward into a dense chord, then contracts back in—each pulse cued as a single hit. Intense, ugly, chaotic.

Writing this was just as time-consuming as it looks. It’s my favourite page from the score.
