OPEN CALL: FRICTION The third chapter of STATES OF CHANGE is here. FRICTION explores the tension that comes with change: the resistance, conflict and opposing forces that emerge when things no longer move in the same direction. Friction can exist between people, ideas, identities, expectations or even within ourselves. It can create discomfort and conflict, but also movement, transformation and something entirely new. We’re inviting artists to explore FRICTION through their own perspectives and artistic practices. All artistic interpretations of the theme are welcome! 📅 Open call until 19 October 2026 🖼️ Exhibition on view throughout November 2026 📍 Scope Gallery @ Maria 01, Helsinki 🎨 Group exhibition | STATES OF CHANGE, Part 3 Apply through the link in our bio! We look forward to seeing your interpretations of FRICTION. . . . . . . #avoinhakutaiteilijoille #taide #helsinkitaide

What gets lost when we remove the human from the creative process? In the third part of our interview with BEGINNING artist Sara Virolainen, we talk about AI, art and the role of human emotion in creating. Sara shares with us how AI doesn’t experience emotions and a finished work generated by AI isn’t the same as a work that a person has thought through, felt and created from the very beginning themselves. Something remains missing: the human reflection, emotion and process behind the work. What do you think? How important is the human process to what makes something art? . . . . #aiart #tekoäly #taide

Meet the artist: Jussi-Pekka Ikonen / Part II ✨ In the second part of our conversation with Jussi-Pekka, he speaks about his work Valensole Lavender Fields and the story behind it. The inspiration for the painting series came during a trip to France, where he was exploring the places connected to Vincent van Gogh and came across the lavender fields of Valensole. The work later became part of his practice while preparing for an art school entrance course and ultimately taking a new step towards studying art himself, making it a fitting interpretation of BEGINNING and a new chapter in his own artistic journey! ✨ Valensole Lavender Fields is currently on view as part of BEGINNING, Chapter I of STATES OF CHANGE at Maria 01.

Meet the artist: Diana Maria de la Encarnacion ✨ In the first part of our conversation with Diana, she shares the story of how her path as an artist began. She had always dreamed of becoming an artist, but people close to her encouraged her to pursue a different direction, which eventually led her to a career in graphic design. Still, art remained part of her journey. Diana has studied at Pekka Halonen Academy and the University of Art and Design Helsinki, and later continued her studies through courses at Art School Hera. With the guidance of her teacher Daniel Enkel, she explored portrait painting, which has since become an important part of her own artistic practice.
