Appreciate UM Athletics pulling me in to help out with sound at Washington-Grizzly stadium. We optimized the system this week, did a variety of tests, and ran a great gameday production for 25,000+ fans. 🔊 🏈

Shout-out to longtime Missoula sound engineer Jay Straw, and the entire UM crew - I’m happy to be a part of it! Go Griz!

I ran sound at the Adams Center for UM commencement ceremonies this weekend!

What a room to run sound in! Appreciate them trusting me to lead engineer their ceremonies. Multiple mics out for the primary speakers, name announcers, UM band, singers, and more - the house was filled with 2,000 proud graduates and about 20,000 in attendance between both ceremonies, with audio sent out to the livestream where another 6,000 viewed online.

Still reflecting on this big gig, and I’m so glad it went off without a hitch. A big thanks to longtime Missoula sound engineer (and early TRC business partner) Jay Straw and all of the UM team. I’m so appreciative to have been invited to be a part of their crew.

Congrats class of 2026!

(Re)Introduction post - who’s behind the studio?

Hey my name is Scott Mathson - fellow musician, songwriter, podcaster, and polymath (or so I’ve been told - look that one up if needed haha). I’ve played drums 🥁 since 9 years old, guitar and singing 🎸 since 13, and started recording music at about 16.

At that time in 2008/2009 I setup my first studio in my family home’s basement and it’s been a passion for me ever since. I kept home recording, learning my craft with my own music, and then opened doors to area musicians. I got into podcasting early, 2010 - and then went on to work in tech/software, amongst other things. I’ve been in bands, classical ensembles, have played my own music at coffee shops, open mics, etc.

Owning The Recording Center is a dream come true. 🎙️ In 2023, after more seriously getting back into audio engineering and music, moving away from tech and I partnered with the studio’s original owner Rick and learned a ton. I bought the business and became the new owner in 2024.

From LPs to EPs to live recordings to videos to album remastering to audiobooks, podcasts, radio ads, TV voiceover, producing, mixing, mastering, format transfers, and far beyond - I’ve already covered a lot of ground. I consider myself to have tuned-in ears, good attention to detail, and I work to achieve the best product every time.

Missoula, MT is a hub of arts and creativity and I feel fortunate to be in the midst of that each and every day. Come on by and say hi, let’s talk about your projects, and thanks for following along here! Keep at your art!

I've been waiting to release this video for about two months now. I could blame my hesitance on the vulnerability of making art with one's body, or the fear of being perceived (and the irony of wanting my music to be heard). I think often about how many different skillsets artists are required to have in this day and age. Writing and recording music is only one small part of being a musician. You also have to know how to market yourself and promote your work, and this often means playing all sorts of different roles that don't necessarily always feel comfortable, or come naturally, to me.

One of my biggest accomplishments in making my second record, Calliope, was being able to ask for help where I needed it, and enlisting many other incredible artists to help make the vision a reality. Releasing this video really feels like I'm giving myself permission to be messy in an attempt to explore those other skills. Nothing about my art has ever been intended to be perfect. That's what I've always liked about making music - the earthy, organic, and sometimes messy process.

I'm excited to start sharing more about this album soon. Be on the lookout for more videos--inspiration behind the songs, more music videos, and live versions of the music. This LP took me two years to write and record, and in an era where AI art litters every fucking platform, I really love these songs for their humanness.

So here is more humanness, perhaps the most exposed (and empowered!) I have ever allowed myself to be publicly. If you're interested, the full video is up on Youtube. Follow the link in my bio to my channel and give it a watch for me, if you are so inclined :)

Big thank you to @melissathompsonart for taking the day to drive up to my neck of the woods, and paint me for this video!

Forever grateful to @sawthesine for his wonderful videography work, and capturing these moments for me.

And another big thanks to @scottmathson for decoding my attempt at vocalizing the drum part that I wanted in this song, and being my percussionist.

This song (and the rest of my album) wouldn't be what it is without Scott's mixing and mastering skills at @therecordingcenter.

December recap - sometimes a month can hold a lot of variety. From finishing EPs, to working on my own original music, to finishing packing/shipping tons of All-State video flash drives and CDs, to recording new Singles, to working on a client’s reel-to-reel deck, to cassette duplication, and beyond.

Grateful for it all, and the people I get to work with - I love running this studio! Happy holidays 🎄 😊

Photos from recording in my hometown Great Falls, where Montana All-State Music Festival was hosted. I was chosen as the new audio video live recording contractor for MHSA.

What an amazing weekend recording these talented musicians! I put a lot of time and prep into this, and set up, ran, and monitored 4 microphones and 5 video cameras spread throughout the auditorium and stage. Now I take all of that footage back to the studio to edit and put the official videos together, and then ship them out to the families!

I had a support crew helping with everything else that was required to make this event a success and I’m so grateful for them! My Mom setup and ran the recordings sales booth, stepdad Glen helped with setup/teardown and sales. Michelle is currently sick and had to sit this one out, yet hyped me up. Rick and former contractors answered all of my random questions about past years’ recordings. Thankful for my former GFHS Band Director @dustymolyneaux for hiring me to do this, and for the guidance he gave 15 years ago that led me to where I am today.

I took over ownership of The Recording Center one year ago! It was pretty awesome to have this big recording land right on that anniversary. Feeling reflective on the busy, fulfilling year that it’s been! Scott Mathson setting up audio recording
