This Sunday is the fourth and final Liberation, Cell by Cell session at Enfield Town Library in partnership with COAG Comics. We’re closing the month by talking about something that affects so many people living with chronic illness and disability: stress, inflammation, pain and fatigue. We’ll be exploring: How stress can affect inflammation, pain and energy How naturopathic approaches can support the body and help reduce pain and fatigue Practical ways to create better conditions for your body to function How to advocate for yourself when you are living with a disability or chronic illness How to communicate what you need when you are not being heard, believed or taken seriously Sunday 27th September 1pm to 3pm Enfield Town Library Free to attend, with refreshments and practical resources to take home. You do not need a diagnosis to come. You do not need to have attended the previous sessions either. Come as you are. Sit, rest, leave the room and come back if you need to. Listening counts too. Ubele in Focus: What You Don’t Always See. For Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we spent time with @sharonbpeter Programme Coordinator at Ubele, to hear more about what it’s like to live and work with sickle cell — and the work she’s doing to create greater awareness beyond Ubele. Over the weekend, we joined Sharon at an event hosted through her organisation @cellsofageneration where she screened her documentary exploring experiences of sickle cell and shared her comics @coagcomics After the screening, we sat down with Sharon to talk about navigating her role at Ubele, running her own organisation, and using her experiences to create spaces where people living with sickle cell can feel seen, heard and supported. This Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we're taking the conversation into the community across North London. 🩸 BLOOD DONATION DRIVE Saturday 19th September · from 5pm · Dugdale Arts Centre, Enfield A screening of The Lifeline Conversations, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. Blood bank partners will be on site so you can register as a donor on the day. Bring one willing donor with you! Someone living with Sickle Cell Disorder needs blood that matches theirs. There's a real chance it's yours. 🩸 The Ro blood subtype many sickle cell patients rely on is far more common in donors of African and Caribbean heritage. Yet myths are keeping our community out of the donor chair. Let's clear them up. YES, you can give blood if you have sickle cell trait. Week two of Liberation, Cell by Cell complete! ❤️ Another wonderful afternoon at Enfield Town Library today. Great conversations, thoughtful questions and a room full of people willing to learn more about their bodies, their health and what it means to live well with pain, fatigue and sickle cell. Thank you to everyone who came, contributed, asked questions and shared their experiences. These are exactly the conversations I wanted this September to create. And we’re not finished yet. Next weekend is a big one. Saturday 19th September, 5pm Dugdale Arts Centre Join us for a viewing of The Lifeline Conversations, a documentary by Cells of a Generation CIC, opening up important conversations around blood donation and the need for more Black and Brown donors. Then on Sunday 20th September, we’re back at Enfield Town Library from 1pm for the third edition of Liberation, Cell by Cell. This session is all about donor readiness, iron and anaemia. We’ll unpack what iron actually does, why anaemia is not always simply an iron problem, and what you need to know before giving blood. Both events are free. Come and learn. Come with your questions. Everything we’re doing this September is FREE. The workshops. The food. The resources. Even books and giveaways for the children who join us. And that only happens because people chose to put something behind the idea. So I want to say thank you. To Sharon Browne-Peter and Cells of a Generation/COAG Comics, who backed this programme when it was still an idea in an email. To NHS Blood and Transplant, whose community grants programme helps make work like this possible. And to children’s author Olivia Ash, who is donating copies of Jael the Sickle Cell Warrior and The Little Sickle Cell Warrior Colouring Book. Representation matters. A child with sickle cell deserves to open a book and see themselves as the main character, not simply the patient. And the people around that child need to understand too.
