yesterday, we celebrated 10 years since the very first @downwarddogfordogs event (slides 4/5), & i’m at a loss to describe the poignant moment it was for me.
the 1st ddfd event was a celebration of completing my yoga teacher training. i’d never taught a class outside of yoga school, & the volume of people that showed up terrified me 😂 it was donation-based, raising r1500 & 80kg of food. i remember my mom driving the donations home, as they wouldn’t fit in my car.

little did i know then how ddfd would flourish. the next few years, i’d host an event roughly once a year. i remember during 2020 lockdown, offering online classes, when ddfd reached the r50 000 donation mark & being blown away at that milestone.

10 years from the first event, ddfd’s evolved into a registered non-profit organisation with the department of social development & donated over r400 000/over a tonne of food to animal shelters 🐾 yesterday’s event alone raised r35 000 (70% of ddfd’s total donations in the first 5 years!!).

10 years of events, sterilisation days, raffles, yin yoga immersions, adoptions, collaborations, innumerable downward dogs, blood, sweat, tears, donation drops, thrift sales, at least five million emails, learning how to face doing all of this without my number one cheerleader in my mom’s absence, going from begging for sponsors & attendees to being spoilt for choice & selling out in mere hours.

i can’t say it was smooth sailing; that would be a lie. but i’ve never once felt unsupported, & i’ve never once felt this is not worth it. i stand in deference to the real heroes, who use these donations in their daily crusade to save animals - doing the heartbreaking and backbreaking work at animal shelters. i get to do the fun part, & you turn it into lifesaving. i’m in awe of you.

some friends have been there right from the very beginning, many more were made along the way. however you’ve supported, whether that’s been attending a class, making a donation, sharing a post, or telling a friend about ddfd - none of this could happen without you. i’m so grateful. i hope you enjoy this memory lane walk. here’s to many more decades of this cause for paws🐾🩶
