What began as a simple conversation has become a celebration of craftsmanship. We are proud to share Kathmandu Weave at T.NUA Exhibition 02 in Milan, Italy

What began as a joyful conversation soon unfolded into a beautiful journey of research, experimentation, craftsmanship, countless discussions, shared laughter, and the search for new meanings through traditional weaving. At Nepal Knotcraft Centre, we were honored with the opportunity to explore and collaborate with an inspiring team. Along the way came excitement, curiosity, and moments of panic, wondering if we could truly preserve the soul, authenticity, and emotions embedded within our craft traditions.
The answer was clear: trust the supreme hands of our artisans.
We allowed their skills, wisdom, and personal interpretations to guide the process. We searched for the right yarns and plant fibers, worked patiently with the loom, and followed wherever the warp and weft chose to take us. Every thread became a dialogue between heritage and imagination, giving new life and meaning to Kathmandu Weave. This creation is not only about a finished piece, it is about people, stories, experimentation, and the courage to reimagine tradition while remaining rooted in craftsmanship.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Sangeeta Thapa ji, who always thinks of us and believes in our work; Mauro, Tao, our founder Shyam Badan Shrestha and the entire team for envisioning and reimagining the Kathmandu Weave; and above all, to our extraordinary artisans whose hands transformed ideas into beautiful weavings. Together, we continue to weave stories, communities, and possibilities.

Vitelli “NO-FOLK. Hacking the Vernacular” is now open at T.nua Lab, via Carlo Boncompagni 44, as part of “A T.NUA Exhibition 02”

The show is the result of a research project conducted by Vitelli between Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 for T.NUA Craftsmanship Program @t.nua_collective
Developed in collaboration with the Knotcraft Centre in Kathmandu @nepalknotcraftcentre and the Rimaglio workshop in Milan @rimaglio the project brought into dialogue Nepali weavers and Italian knitters on the matter of textile manipulation, exploring the vernacular through embodied knowledge and computational intelligence and revealing that “the material world is nothing but information, and information is nothing but material”. As a form of anonymous collective intelligence, the vernacular is not merely traditional but a distributed mode of knowledge embedded in materials and technologies. It is alive and ongoing. We conceived the “hacking” of the vernacular as an experiment of collective de-anonymization. Through an intricate use of natural fibers and yarn leftovers, we created a series of fabrics that introduce moments of singularity within otherwise anonymous forms of well-crafting: non-functional constructions, intentional “errors”, inefficient programming, and other subversive gestures that reveal the presence of the producer and the uniqueness of the product.
The exhibition presents a collection of textile collages engaging in a transformative relationship with clothing, or a questioning stance toward technocracy in our industry. On view through October 2026. Visits are by appointment, to be scheduled on selected dates: please DM or write to tnua.collective@gmail.com

The T.NUA Craftsmanship Program 2025/2026 focused on textile practices in Nepal and Italy. As part of the project, Vitelli’s @vitelli_earth founder and creative director Mauro Simionato @simionatomauro conducted on-site research in both countries, collaborating with the Nepal Knotcraft Centre (NKC) @nepalknotcraftcentre in Nepal and Rimaglio @rimaglio in Italy. Simionato’s research investigated weaving, knotting, natural fibers, reclaimed yarns, and industrial knitting techniques.

In Nepal, Simionato had the opportunity to collaborate with the Nepal Knotcraft Centre in Patan, in the Kathmandu Valley. Founded in 1984 by Shyam Badan Shrestha, the centre has become a leading institution in the country’s craft sector. Shrestha is an internationally recognized figure in Nepali weaving and has dedicated more than four decades to preserving traditional fiber crafts while advancing women’s livelihoods. Under her leadership, NKC has played a pivotal role in safeguarding and developing craft knowledge, becoming a pioneer in Nepal’s contemporary craft landscape. Through innovative use of locally available plant fibers, including maize husk, bamboo, water hyacinth, cattail, and banana stem, Shrestha has laid the foundation for sustainable and environmentally responsible craft production.

We are pleased to introduce Rimaglio @rimaglio, which is collaborating with Mauro Simionato @simionatomauro @vitelli_earth on the Italian component of his project within the T.NUA Craftsmanship Program 2025/2026. The project explores both manual and industrial textile processes, plant-based fibers, regenerative textile practices, and fabric-making techniques across Italy and Nepal.

Founded in 2016 in Schio, Veneto, by Giulia Bortoli, Rimaglio is a knitwear consultancy studio operating at the intersection of craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation. The studio approaches knitwear as a space for material exploration and radical refinement, using a language of precision and subversion.

The studio functions as a place of constant dialogue between designer and artisan, technology and manufacturing, and techniques of the past and possibilities of the future. Among its collaborations are brands such as Moschino, Hermès, Burberry, Stella McCartney, Bottega Veneta, The Attico, and Coperni.

We are pleased to introduce the Nepal Knotcraft Centre and its founder, Shyam Badan Shrestha, who is collaborating with Mauro Simionato on the Nepali research component of his project within the T.NUA Craftsmanship Program 2025/2026. The project explores autochthonous fibers and botanical research alongside regenerative textile practices and fabric-making techniques in both Italy and Nepal.

Shyam Badan Shrestha is a nationally celebrated leader in Nepal’s craft sector, who has spent over 40 years preserving traditional fiber weaving and advancing women’s livelihoods. In 1984, she founded the Nepal Knotcraft Centre (NKC) with just three women practicing simple macramé, gradually transforming it into a nationwide movement that empowers hundreds of artisans. As her work expanded, NKC itself became a pioneer in Nepal’s contemporary craft landscape, working with communities, especially women in remote regions, to strengthen skills such as knotting, twining, coiling, and braiding. Through innovations with locally available plant fibers like maize husk, bamboo, water hyacinth, cattail, and banana stem, Mrs. Shrestha laid the foundation for sustainable, eco-friendly craft production deeply rooted in Nepal’s weaving heritage. Beyond the Centre, she co-founded the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal (WEAN) and has led initiatives supporting women-led cooperatives and training programs nationwide, earning honors such as the World Craft Council Award of Excellence, the SAARC Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement in Women Entrepreneurship Award.

We are pleased to announce the participation of Italian designer Mauro Simionato and his initiative, Vitelli, in the 2025/2026 T.NUA Craftsmanship Program. The project explores fabric-making practices in Italy and Nepal through the theme “Vernacular and Regenerative Textile Practices Applied to Experimental Wearability”.

Mauro Simionato is a designer, educator, and creative director whose work bridges ecology, craft, industrial design, and contemporary aesthetics. As the founder and creative lead of Vitelli Maglieria Italiana, he is redefining the role of fabric-making in the postdigital age, developing a distinctive “ecocore” language rooted in radical upcycling and artisanal experimentation. Through Vitelli, Simionato explores the liminality between countercultural identity and sustainable practice—from the use of deadstock yarns and regenerated fibers to collaborations with independent textile communities across Italy—crafting a vision of fashion as a living, circular ecosystem.

Alongside his work with Vitelli, Simionato teaches at the Università Iuav di Venezia within the Master in Fashion, Pathway in Fashion Ecologies, where he leads the EcoDesign Lab. His teaching and research focus on rethinking the fashion supply chain through the lenses of ecology, behavioral design, and systemic innovation. The Lab integrates theory and material practice, encouraging students to translate environmental awareness into tangible design strategies, and to experiment with circularity, transparency, and low-impact production.

Through both his studio practice and academic work, Simionato articulates an idea of fashion as a continuum—an evolving dialogue between culture, environment, and material intelligence.

His work has been featured in Vogue Italia, Vogue Business, Vogue Runway, Vanity Fair, GQ, i-D, WWD, Dazed, Fashion Network, BOF, and HYPEBEAST, among others.
