Sonic Journeys Screening

Date: Monday, November 2 (the day before a public holiday in Japan)
Doors Open: 7:00 PM – Midnight (Screening: 8:00 PM – 10:30 PM)
Venue: SOUND BAR OTU @bar_otu_nagoya
Admission: ¥2,500 (includes a ¥1,000 drink ticket)

An audiovisual journey through cities, communities, and music.

Social media is full of short videos, and they’re great. But sometimes, there’s nothing better than slowing down and really immersing yourself in music.

Sonic Journeys is a documentary project that brings you the stories of musicians and their music, told from the heart.

The films didn’t have Japanese subtitles. But after watching the episode made by LA-based filmmaker Nathan Pratts (@withnathanmp ), I was so moved by his work that I thought, “People in Japan absolutely need to see this!”

So I reached out directly to Nathan and bands, got their permission, and teamed up with my good friend Komo (@komo_r_09 )to add Japanese subtitles.

This time, we’ll be screening two special episodes that take you deep into the music scenes of Indonesia and Australia, complete with Japanese subtitles.

Screening Lineup

Episode 1: Thee Marloes @theemarloes

A soul trio that started out in a small room in Surabaya, Indonesia.

This documentary follows their journey as they talk about signing with their dream label, Big Crown Records, and their deep love for their hometown. The filmmaker traveled all the way from LA to tell their story.

Episode 2: Surprise Chef @surprisechef

A five-piece band (now a four-piece) at the heart of Melbourne’s jazz-funk scene.

From bakeries and local radio to their favorite neighborhood spots, this 48-minute documentary captures the atmosphere of the city where their music was born and the deep bonds and culture that shape their sound.

Come experience the atmosphere of these music scenes and discover what makes today’s soul and funk music so special.

Everyone is welcome. Come hang out and enjoy the films!

I quit my job one year ago today to freelance full time as a filmmaker.

A year later and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Sure, there have been highs and lows, but I feel more on the path to what I want to be, than I ever have before.

Looking back on everything I’ve made or been a part of in the last year, I feel so far from what I was making then. I can’t wait to see where the next year takes me and beyond.

That’s all, time to get back to work.

6 months ago @withnathanmp asked me if I wanted to go to Melbourne with him and film the next episode of @sonicjourneysyt.

A few weeks later we were on the other side of the world eating roo, and chatting soul and funk music with the undeniable @surprisechef

Now, the doc is live and ready to be seen. Check out our piece at the link in my bio.

Cheers

One of my favorite BTS shots from my trip to Surabaya to visit and interview Thee Marloes.

First post is live on the new page @songsandstoriesyt.

Go give it a follow if you’re interested in music and storytelling as we plan to release episode 1 about Thee Marloes over the coming weeks.

A lot of people ask me how this came about and it’s a cool story and indicative of how being curious and open can lead to exciting places. In March, I started volunteering at @dublab in the middle of (admittedly) a quarter-life crisis as I was looking for more ways to make an impact in the world. Several months later, while borderline obsessed with a new band’s sound I discovered, I asked Rachel Day (programming director at dublab) if I could interview Thee Marloes and air it on dublab — the intention being an hour long Zoom call.

A couple days later, I just thought to myself, f*ck it, what if I go to Indonesia? Rachel suggested I could grab dinner with the band and spend some time with them in the studio. One thing led to the next, and I was on my way to Surabaya with an itinerary built out by @adiabstrak to spend two days getting to know Thee Marloes.
