As part of our 8th meeting, we convened at @angala.in for a listening circle, film screening, and and a brief discussion of 'Sultana's Dream', one of the most prominent feminist science fiction pieces to have been written in Indian history by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain! 🌻

We watched two short movies based on the story!
💫We started with watching the first film/audio narration of the story created by @goetheinstitut_bangladesh and accompanied with a series of gorgeous illustrations created by @chitraganeshbkny
💫 After the narration, we moved on to watching one of the episodes titled 'Sultana's Dream' from the Lost Migrations animated series which was inspired by Rokeya Hossain's Sultana's Dream and was made by @project.dastaan and @spittingimage.in highlighting several experiences and traumatic memories of the Partition era

Thanking all individuals who made these fantastic films and made it possible for all of us to discuss and admire Rokeya Hossain's brilliant mind!🌻

And a special thanks to Angala for letting us watch these movies at their beautiful space! 🌼

Hi film friends,

LINES OF PLAY is our special category for this year’s call!

In a world increasingly shaped by spectacle, algorithmic performance, and manufactured certainties, this year's special focus turns toward play as a critical and creative force. Refusing the binary between seriousness and frivolity, the program calls for films that engage humour, irony, experimentation, improvisation, and subversive imagination as ways of responding to contemporary realities.

Rather than treating play as an escape from politics, these works approach it as a method of inquiry, relation, and intervention. Through absurdity, mischief, speculation, and collective invention, they explore how cinema can challenge dominant narratives, open unexpected connections, and imagine other ways of being together.

Have a project that fits? Then submit your film by September 30, 2026, via FilmFreeway. Link in bio.

We can’t wait to see what you’ve been working on!

Our Rice Tastes of Spring (2025) by Anumeha Yadav is a fictional picture book that draws on the author’s investigation into the central government’s rice fortification programme (now temporarily discontinued), published as a three-part series on @TheWireIn.

Encompassing interviews, findings, as well as personal relationships, the book critiques the corporate capture of food systems and what we risk losing when we privatise the commons. It employs a painterly mixed-media approach, using photographs from the Netarhat Plateau taken by the author while reporting in the region.

The book is published by @Red_PandaIndia and illustrated by @SpittingImage.in.

On The Locavore website (link in bio), read our #BooksonFood interview “Anumeha Yadav’s picture book asks—‘what are we doing to our rich food diversity, our seeds?’” to learn more about the process of putting the book together, and how her work as a journalist informed the story.

‘Our Rice Tastes of Spring’ is is also being published in Marathi and Hindi as बासन्‍ती स्वाद के हमारे चावल (Baasanti Swad ke Hamara Chawal) by Eklavya Books.
