Some experiences hand you answers. The ones that really matter hand you better questions. That’s what my #FisherFamilyFellowship at @stanford_cddrl turned out to be.

I arrived with questions about democracy, governance, politics, conflict and participation. Questions shaped by my own years in public life in India, and by a stubborn belief that democracy remains meaningful only when we keep asking how institutions can become more responsive, inclusive and connected to the people they serve.

I’m leaving with fewer certainties than I arrived with, but with a lot more curiosity.

Curiosity to listen before forming an opinion. To question what seems obvious. To look at familiar problems through unfamiliar lenses. And, perhaps most importantly, the humility to accept that sometimes the most important question is the one I haven’t yet thought to ask.

I had the privilege of learning from people whose work I had read for years. My sincere gratitude to Kathryn, Larry, Franc, Michael, Dinsha, Paul, Mike and every faculty member who shared their time, knowledge and honest perspectives with us.

And to Cheng Hyunh, our Program Manager, thank you. Your care, patience and attention to every small detail made this fellowship what it was.

But honestly, @stanford was never just about the classroom. It was about the people.

Fellows from different countries, backgrounds and professional lives. We didn’t always agree, and that was precisely the point. The coffee conversations, debates that went nowhere and everywhere, laughter, disagreements and friendships that grew out of all of it will stay with me far beyond the seminar rooms.

Maybe that’s the real purpose of learning. Not to reach a finish line where you have every answer, but to develop the curiosity to keep asking better questions.

If this journey gave me one word to carry forward, it is curiosity. Grateful for the journey. Grateful for the people. Grateful for the questions I still haven’t answered.

Thank you, #Stanford, for this extraordinary opportunity, and thank you to all the wonderful people who have become friends for life.

Much love❤️

It has been a fantastic week with our 2026 Fisher Family Summer Fellows! 🌎️

This first week, our cohort dove into foundational questions of democracy, development, and the rule of law with talks from @francis.fukuyama, @larryjdiamond, @kathryn.stoner, Erik Jensen, and @ambmcfaul, exploring everything from “What is Democracy?” to global challenges facing democratic governance today. Fellows also examined case studies on autocracy and local governance in the Middle East with Hesham Sallam and @aycalem, dug into China’s global information ecosystem with Jennifer Pan, and joined a fireside chat on energy and geopolitics with Arun Majumdar (@stanford.doerr) and David Fedor.

Beyond the classroom, fellows sharpened their storytelling skills in a communication workshop with @mattabrahams to prepare for their upcoming “TED-style” Spotlight Talks and had the chance to build connections with faculty and one another along the way.

Next week, fellows will continue their Spotlight Talks, learn how deliberative democracy can drive positive change, explore the politics of migrant scapegoating, and hear from and @hrf panel of regional experts, including taking a look at HRF’s Tyranny Tracker index.
