What a beautiful surprise to see our feature on @bandcamp out in the world today, written by the great George Grella, right as we hit our one year mark since launching Kou.

Neither of us could have imagined what this journey would be. But even more than that, we couldn’t have imagined the incredible ecosystem of people that has formed around it, which really feels more like a movement: artists, both sonic and visual, engineers, designers, studios, shipping, manufacturers, printers, distributors, press, listeners, collectors. Every single one makes Kou flow through the world, and we’re deeply grateful for all of it.

Starting a label in 2025 has been the most challenging and rewarding thing we’ve ever done, not to mention fifteen records in that year, which is near-psychotic. So proud, so grateful, and the movement keeps going. 🖤

Steve Rude was one of the first artists I met when I came into Hanna-Barbera Cartoons in 1992. He’s talent and drive have since seen him become one of the most revered artists in comic-dom.

My old friend @ArlenSchumer (creator of the Frederator Fredbot) insisted we meet. A rabid admirer of Jonny Quest creator #DougWildey and Space Ghost’s #AlexToth, Steve and @MikeBaron2016 had created a comic character Nexus, and he was hoping it could become the next great action/adventure cartoon. I was moved my Steve’s passion and the stories they had created and we immediately set him up for a feature development deal.

While we weren’t able to get the movie going, a few years later, Steve’s Jonny Quest fandom resulted in a beautiful series of oversized cel creation for Hanna-Barbera’s animation art department (when animation art was still a big thing). Numbered and signed by the Rude Dude they were naturally an immediate sensation.

“At any given moment, time is leaking into the present.”

For three decades, Randall Dunn’s touch has been on some of the defining records in heavy and experimental music, from Sunn O)))’s Monoliths & Dimensions to Panos Cosmatos’s Mandy score. This is his first album under his own name since Beloved (2018), and it starts from a Philip K. Dick idea: that the world we agree on is only one version among many.

It’s four pieces cut at Circular Ruin in Brooklyn, where bits of his years behind the board leak through: a remembered gig, a jazz line, a string part, run through loopers and processing until they turn into something else. The ensemble cast includes Jim Jarmusch, Laima Leyton, Briggan Krauss, and Cyro Baptista.
