It was an honor to be a part of my first ever “Paint Phoenix Purple” event hosted by @iamundefinedart and The City Of Phoenix!

It started as a resource fair where attendees could talk to organizations that support individuals who are in need of counseling, housing, community, etc.. with a focus on victims of Domestic Violence.

We then transitioned into a guided art activity where we painted on individual canvases to create our own vase 🏺 to go along with the theme “Kintsugi”. It was a very reflective and thoughtful way to express ourselves through art! I enjoyed every minute of it!

Make sure to check out @sunflowersoulfoundation and support!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month:

Paint Phoenix Purple helps spread awareness to prevent domestic violence and support victims and survivors. This campaign addresses a very serious problem that is often difficult to talk about and recognize. One in four women and one in ten men experience sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime, according to the National Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Survey.

This years theme for the "Paint in the Park" event was "Resilience in Gold" inspired by the Japanese tradition of Kintsugi. This *SOLD OUT* event of 100 City of Phoenix Employees and Community members metaphorically learned how each crack and repaired fragment represents a story, a moment of survival, and the strength found in continuing forward.

I would like to thank City of Phoenix Human Services and Phoenix LGBTQ Employee team for hiring me and trusting my vision every year!

Also, the creatives who help bring my vision to life and contributed to the experience: @sampeckart , @rosewaxvinylclub and @chelseasukaymusica

And most of all, honoring MY SISTER’S DELORES SMITH LIGHT AND LOVE as we bring more awareness and healing to families and individuals. She is my FOREVER ETERNAL SUNSHINE!!!!!!!!!!🌻🌻🌻

I wanted to create a vibrant storytelling piece with these pillars in mind. After watching Arizona Financial Foundation videos, reading press releases, and exploring other materials, an idea came to mind. I thought, Why not paint wildflowers in bloom? Yesssss! It reminded me of my weekend trips to Sedona, Payson or Flagstaff that brought light to my life. There were so many beautiful connections there, and I will go further in detail in my upcoming posts.

Hi baby it’s me Nani,

I think griefs got a choke hold on Nani! Since you’ve been gone, I do this thing every night as I pass the spot you were dropped at in the street. The spot you were left to fight for your life. Baby you were just 2 houses from home. I always look in the review mirror for a glimmering of hope that I would see you waiving me down. I don’t see you and i get sad about that.
My heart knows you’re not there, but a part of me still looks for you. I just want to see you face, hear your voice, and have just more moments with you! You were Nani’s 1st Gbabe and I miss you! ❤️‍🩹 #justiceforjaylenreeves #justice #A7AWWTF #touchedbyanangle #reevesstrong

SUNFLOWER SOUL!

I was recently approached by an educator who hired me last year to come share my story and my sister’s light with her class. She shared that another educator, who had also brought her students to hear my story, was inspired that she changed her entire classroom decor to SUNFLOWERS. 🌻 Turning towards the sun has become her classroom motto.

Knowing that my sister’s light continues to inspire others in meaningful ways... means so much to me. 🌻🌻🌻's came to me in my darkest moments, when I needed to meet someone, opportunities, etc. I knew it was not a coincidence. I followed the sun, documented my journey, kept going, rested, and the list goes on. I'm just getting started and am looking forward to future projects, conferences, and programs in the near future. It’s about the journey.

Teachers words:

"Your art presentation and the story of the sunflower made such an impact on me. As I tore down my old classroom décor, I found myself rebuilding my classroom around the idea of the sunflower—always looking toward the light, standing tall, and weathering the storms.

Thank you for the impact you’ve had, not only on our students, but on me personally. Your message inspired me in ways you may never know. 🌻💛"

STOP THE VIOLENCE!

Last night, I attended the Light Arizona Purple to Support Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention at the Capitol.

Over the past couple of years, I have witnessed and heard about vital programs, hotlines, and prevention initiatives being cut or significantly reduced due to funding challenges and changes within government. These are not simply programs on a budget sheet, they are lifelines for individuals and communities seeking help, resources, and support.

Prevention and RESOURCES save lives. 🌻🌻🌻🌻

Let's heal, Sunflower Soul 🌻

ART HEALS. Art can become a bridge between what we feel inside and what we are able to express outside. It can help us create a new relationship with what we have experienced.

Try it sometime, you don't need much: Paper, pencil or some markers or paint (brush, etc) 😉 Turn on some music and start experimenting. Add layers. Paint over some things and watch your masterpiece come to life. Don’t worry about what it’s going to look like.

Life is not perfect, why should our art be. That is the beauty of it and what sets us free.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

Shining light on an issue that brought so much pain as a secondary survivor of violence. My sister was a cool breeze on a summer day. A person who was chill, fun, witty, girlie girl, and loving. She was the life of the party, enjoying life and taking care of her children. She was at every event (birthday, healing events, holidays, etc.) and she loved her family so much. She was everyone’s cheerleader, always encouraging and supporting the people she loved. She was spoiled by her siblings because she was the youngest out of 9. She was my baby sister, and I had the privilege of watching her grow from a little baby into the beautiful young woman she became. I helped care for her when she was a child. I visited her during college, created her prom dresses and did her makeup, celebrated her graduations, helped move her into her dorm, assisted with resumes, made home visits, and stood by her side in the delivery room when she gave birth to my niece and nephew. I was there for so many chapters of her life, and her life matters! I honor my sister, Delores EVERY DAY. My forever SUNFLOWER SOUL.

🌻More than 1 in 3 women (34%) in the U.S. — about 43.5 million women have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

🌻More than 1 in 6 men — about 20.7 million men have experienced one of those forms of intimate partner violence during their lifetime.

🌻About 1 in 5 homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner, according to CDC data. More than half of female homicide victims are killed by a current or former male intimate partner.
