We had the privilege to help @samfoyle with his source to sea trip which finished at Big Ben early on Saturday. Guiding for the last leg from Chelsea meant a 4.00am start to catch the end of the ebb tide. We decided to sleep on our boards on riverside on Friday night to make the early start a bit less early. The pay off was a stunning sunrise on the river and a completely empty river. London was as still as a zombie movie scene.

More on Sam’s quest below and in the website
It did make us think we should do this a little more often as we haven’t done this particular trip at sunrise since 2020.

A big thanks to @ldnsportstrust for use of the Cremorne Centre in Chelsea and to the @londonportauth for approving the trip.

In August of 2020, Simon was on holiday with friends in Cornwall, when he drowned in a tragic accident. He was paddleboarding in the Camel Estuary, near Rock, when he jumped off his board and his ankle leash became tangled with a swing mooring. The current forced him one way and his board the other, and he was dragged underneath a boat. Despite the best efforts of many local people to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The inquest into Simon’s death recorded a verdict of accidental death, and the case highlighted the issue of safety in paddleboarding generally. Simon was wearing an ankle leash which meant that, against the weight of the current, he was unable to reach the release clip and free himself. Had he been wearing a quick-release leash attached to his waist, he would probably be alive today.

Simon’s best friend, Sam Foyle, who attended St Edward’s School with Simon, has since been campaigning tirelessly to raise awareness of the importance of choosing the right type of leash for the conditions, to prevent more needless deaths.

He has been working with the sport’s governing body, British Canoeing, to update their standard guidance, and with the UK Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards, as well as lobbying some of the main manufacturers to sell all their paddleboards with a quick-release waist leash and/or both types of leash, with clear instructions on how and when to use each type.

3.45am.

The final paddle of a 235km journey.

Yesterday morning I joined @samfoyle for the final paddle of his 235km journey down the River Thames with @supwithdale , finishing beneath the Houses of Parliament as the city slowly woke up around us.

Over the previous ten days, Sam had paddleboarded down the River Thames, raising awareness of leash safety and funds for the Simon Flynn Educational Foundation.

Five years ago, Sam lost his best friend Simon Flynn in a paddleboarding accident caused by leash entrapment. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the importance of quick release waist leashes and water safety on moving water.

Watching the final miles into Westminster was a reminder that this challenge was about far more than distance. Every conversation, interview, social media post and mile paddled has helped spread an important safety message that could save lives.

From the source of the Thames to Westminster, every mile helped raise awareness of a simple message: wear the right leash for the conditions.

❤️ If you’d like to support Sam’s fundraising for the Simon Flynn Educational Foundation, the page remains open and I have added the link to my bio. Every donation helps the Foundation continue Simon’s legacy by working with local schools and helping remove barriers that prevent children from having the opportunity to learn and thrive. You can also help support by sharing! ❤️

A huge thank you to @active360sup, @active360paul and Richard, whose knowledge and guidance made it possible for us to safely paddle this unique section of the Thames through central London, and to @lst_kayaking and @portoflondonauthority for helping make the journey possible.

It’s also been brilliant to see so many people and organisations helping amplify the message, including @paddleuk @rnli @standuppaddleuk @supfm_podcast @supjunkie.uk @andrew_kay_journalist @stewartjames.mclean @barry.hughes.paddlesport @safetyandstandards @abovewateruk @brendonprinceadventures and everyone else who has supported the campaign along the way.
