It takes a village! What an honor it has been to gift you the Temple of the Moon. Truly a labor of love.

I’ve always been comforted by the quote about how grief is love with nowhere to go, and the temple gives it a physical space to inhabit and be released.

So many of you have asked how it feels to see something we spent thousands of hours building finally burn: we wouldn’t have it any other way. That is the purpose of the temple. And while it is an enormous gift of time and energy for us to give, the real gift is to us builders, who have the pleasure of helping others work through grief and create an unforgettable community in the process. Thank you for the opportunity to give this, the pleasure was all ours.

Enormous gratitude to everyone involved, not limited to:

Lead Artist: James ‘Stretch Goal’ Gwertzman
Architect: Annie Locke ‘missChief’ Scherer

Tim Priest, build lead for Temple of the Moon talks about the crew and meaning behind the design.

Every year the Temple is powered by a solar array lovingly called the Unicorn.  The build tools, kitchen, and art piece are entirely solar powered.

Temple crew is unique in that we camp at the art piece during the build. New this year our campers are supported by a hybrid BESS system (Battery Energy Storage Solution). Our camp is focused on real energy conservation — the BESS runs primarily off its three battery banks, significantly reducing emissions and generator load for our campers.  The generator rarely even runs.  That means dramatically less fuel, dramatically less noise, and a dramatically smaller footprint.

Our temple builders work hard day and night building this sacred space for all of us.  We are honored and excited this year to provide them with a hybrid energy source so they can recharge and recover when not building.

We are deeply passionate about responsible energy use on playa.  DM us with any questions. #burningman #Burningman temple #2026temple Special thanks to @svitoval for this beautiful footage.

The Temple kitchen cooks with love building community through nourishment, art, and intention. Love fuels the hearts and souls of the Temple builders, infusing every beam, every meal, every moment.

The Temple is an expression of love, carried by the hands and hearts of its community.

Take a tour with Gravity, this year’s kitchen lead.
Special thanks to the Temple Builders Guild and to @lana for capturing the beauty of it all.#burningman #burningmantemple #2026temple

Building with @gwertzman and the Moonlight Collective over the past five years has shaped so much of who we are as makers. We’ve brought 3 projects to the playa together, and Temple of the Moon is our fourth.
An art build is always an interesting process, you don’t truly see the work until the very end, and the learning along the way is constant. We’ve just crossed our halfway point, and I had a chance to catch up with James today and ask him what this build has taught him so far.
The Temple community has been incredible mentors, guiding our growth as we take on work at this scale. We’re deeply grateful for the leadership, support, and care that has carried us to this moment. #burningman #burningmantemple #2026temple

Discovered a new avatar … the Wood Benders.
The Temple build leads are true artists shaping timber with intention, care, and a kind of quiet magic. Their expertise becomes a form of love, and their leadership creates space for all of us to grow, learn, and build together.
This environment changes you. In the best ways.
