Two weeks on from my second Spiral, and finishing 2nd still stings a bit—looks like two might just be my number this year.

Running around a 400m track for six hours isn’t your typical race. With niche races like this, the mental game is huge, and ultimately it comes down to smart pacing, staying fuelled, and taking it one lap at a time. Similar to BYU but you don’t stop.

The first 3 hours were decent. It was windy and mild, but overall solid conditions. I settled into a good rhythm and stayed with the front pack. Around hour 4, some minor GI issues kicked in—probably from relying too much on liquids and not enough solid food. Clearly didn’t listen to my advice above.

Still, I pushed through, managed to take the lead, and held on as long as I could, but let it slip in the final few laps. Fair play to @tee.mcq for some well timed pacing to take a well-deserved win.

Pleased to have beaten my stats from last year, and it was great seeing so many returning runners and volunteers. This race is a bit nuts, but it’s fast becoming one of my favourites (nearly up there with Comrades). @wereunderground have something special going here 🫶🏻

Big kudos to @prabhuram.rvs on his first-ever race. You definitely jumped in at the deep end, but you should be proud—a first marathon is tough enough, let alone 6 hours around a track and aiming for 50km 🙌🏼

Another thanks to @marioninounette for organising another brilliant event. The sport needs more race directors like her (still working on convincing her to actually run it one year 🤔)

Sometimes the races that sting the most are also the ones you care about the most—and I guess that’s what keeps us coming back.

Until next year, Spiral 🫡

A friendly chap asked me why I'd want to run around a track for six hours. Turns out it's actually way more simple than caring for a newborn. Having six hours to not think about or do anything except running was a marvellous way to spend an afternoon. Thanks @wereunderground ! And thanks @whatderricksees for the piccies 📸
The Spiral delivered 🌀

And ofc thanks @franzi_klein for letting me off daddy duties for a while x

The Spiral 🌀 A 6 hour, 400 metre track event. What do I say about this? Well, it lived up to ALL of my expectations. Honestly I was surrounded by the best people, organisation was top tier and I had already signed up to the next one, having not even finished the first lap!

Highly recommend this as a first ultra or a flatter run - I will be back crawling faster for 2027 ⭐️

The London 5000: 20th - 16:03.93 [13/06/26]

Not the run I was hoping for on Saturday at Parliament Hill. I had aimed high, knowing I felt good and the training had gone well, despite a small ankle/achilles flare up the week before, which had gone away pretty quickly. The first 2 kilometers felt good, but with numerous factors affecting my run, including: the heat, headwind in the final 125m, being clipped twice and running in no-mans-land, the pace dropped and unsurprisingly, my time slipped away. Having had time to reflect on the race, it could have gone a lot worse. I didn't drop out and continued to work hard, until the end. There is a lot to work on, off the back of the race, to hit my targets and goals, but 16:03 is still a respectable time.

Thank you also to @tee.mcq and others, including @ben_chapman97 for the support before/during/after the race. It was lovely to meet new people and enjoy an afternoon out in the sun, watching many runners tackling the 5000m!

Time to look forwards to the next race. Onwards and upwards!
