Figure x MAZi Architects x Temporary Office are one of the winners of Los Angeles’ Small Lots, Big Impacts competition!

Share A Lot (or A Little) proposes to split Site B into five small lot subdivisions. Generous ground floor yards separate building volumes, preserving a sense of home so often missing from higher density housing. Importantly, we believe the act of sharing and being communal should be a daily choice, and that it is possible to have the best of both worlds and the fifth lot is exemplary of this potential. In the most ideal sharing scenario, individual owners of other parcels come together to co-own this fifth lot. For some groups, the structure on this fifth lot can become a shared guest house, a daycare, a co-working studio, a cooperative rental, or even house a 4-car garage; the key is communal use and ownership.

The hope is that the structuring of the lots will incentivize some to self-organize, share, and build a resilient mosaic of independence and interdependence. Ultimately, as we endeavor to replace scarcity with lower barriers to ownership, equity, and sharing, the city can eventually become even more so a reflection of its inhabitants.

The jury noted: “Share A Lot introduces a different visual vocabulary for L.A., but one that incorporates some decidedly Angeleno qualities like the portico and the gardens associated with each home. The potential cooperative ownership of the fifth parcel offers a new model for sharing resources that still ensures at least eight units on this small site. The repetition of parts and rigor of the scheme produce a project that seems equal parts refined, buildable, and replicable.”

cityLAB, alongside our partners in the L.A. Mayor’s office and the L.A. Housing Department, are proud to announce the results of the Small Lots, Big Impacts design competition. We received hundreds of high-quality submissions that show how we can build more infill, affordable, contextual starter homes in Los Angeles to help Angelenos put down roots and continue to call this city home. The Jury recognized 41 teams with awards. Over the next three posts we will highlight all awarded submissions.

Above we highlight the professional and student teams who were labeled as winners or received citations in the Gentle Density site category. These projects demonstrate how 2-9 units can appear just like one from the street, an essential strategy for better utilizing urban infill sites in the city.

We are so grateful for the thoughtful and impressive work we received from all the submitting teams. On the initiative website, https://www.smalllots.citylab.ucla.edu, we highlight all the submissions so landowners across L.A., public and private alike, can be inspired by seeing what is possible on small, leftover parts of our city.

We will be releasing more information about stage two of this initiative later this summer.

Our shortlisted installation, ‘Legacy Mist,’ for @clerkenwelldesignweek is a tribute to Dr. John Frost, the 19th-century physician and botanist who founded St. John’s Hospital and the Medico-Botanical Society—located at the very site of our installation. As visitors pass through a cloud of botanically-infused vapour, they encounter not only the scented wisdom of global traditions but also an invitation to pause, breathe and feel – a contemporary act of public care.

Congratulations to all shortlisted entries and the final winner of this competition! Competition organized by @dezeen and @villeroyboch

This retreat house, nestled in the dense forest of Kitakaruizawa, was a proposal for the NOT A HOTEL competition — and although it wasn’t selected, it’s worth sharing. The concept draws inspiration from the Japanese art of gift boxes like kiribako and oribako, revealing itself gradually, layer by layer. Thoughtfully integrated into the rocky landscape, the structure gently follows the natural contours of the site. Its floating slate roof, supported in part by native rocks, mirrors the quiet elegance of the forest and the vernacular forms of Japanese courtyard houses. Organized into four quadrants — for living, resting, cleansing, and entry — the house dissolves boundaries between indoors and outdoors, inviting nature into every space. Like unwrapping a delicate gift, each area offers a moment of discovery and connection with the surroundings.

Mori-Hako, #Kitakaruizawa, Japan by Temporary Office @temporaryoffice

Temporary Office: Inspired by the delicate art of a Japanese gift box like Kiribako or Oribako, where each layer is thoughtfully designed to build anticipation and surprise, this retreat house gradually reveals itself, much like the careful unwrapping of nature’s gift. Situated within the tranquil, dense forest of Kitakaruizawa, the design emerges as a respectful offering to its surroundings, with each space representing a new discovery within the natural environment...

Mori Hako House, designed by Temporary Office @temporaryoffice , is a compact, nature-integrated dwelling that reinterprets the traditional Japanese house with a contemporary approach. The design emphasizes modularity and openness, using a timber framework that allows flexibility and natural ventilation. Positioned within a forested landscape, the house establishes a strong dialogue between interior and exterior, with carefully placed openings framing views of the surroundings. A balance of minimalism and warmth defines the living spaces, enhancing both functionality and tranquility. Through its lightweight structure and sustainable materials, Mori Hako House offers a refined architectural solution that harmonizes with nature while maintaining adaptability.

The Fields and Foundation exhibit wrapped up last week! We'd like to thank everyone who attended and was interested to learn more about a few projects that dealt with different site and heritage conditions.

Extra Thanks to @temporaryoffice and Temple Gallery for making this happen. Hope to have more exhibits in the future!
