Mangaroa Farms recently featured in Issue 11 of @ontheland_mag in an eight-page spread about the farm and the question it keeps asking: what does the land want to be?

The article covers the 1,200 acre project holding a market garden and orchard, a farm shop, a sheep and beef operation, local events, and 700 acres of pine in transition back to native forest.

On The Land looks at the people on the ground at @mangaroafarms, from the farmers who are restoring soil through adaptive grazing, to the team simultaneously opening an on-site butchery to serve the local community - to the market gardeners to the shop keepers, and the storytellers & events team - who can all trace their relationship with the project back to the soil.

For Mangaroa Farms, the measure of success is simple: if the Mangaroa river is healthy, the team knows they are doing a good job.

Issue 12 features:
- Tara Benedict's @wildwood_farm regenerative pick-your-own flower farm in Taupō on the cover,
- @kiwihomesteaders - a Bay of Plenty couple teaching traditional craft alongside te ao Māori
- Growing and cooking perennial food forest vegetables with @permadynamics
- Forage bush kai with @sam_the_trap_man (an extract from his new book)
- Processing roosters with @gillian.swinton
- Growing brambles with @thefoodfarmnz
- Crafting a hunting bow with @threycameronarchery
- Making liquid feed with @edible.backyard

From December @ontheland_mag becomes a quarterly seasonal journal.

Most permaculture operations are limited to backyards, lifestyle blocks and market gardens. But what about one on 1200 acres?

Five minutes from Upper Hutt, Mangaroa Farms is trying to establish such an operation, quietly showing what NZ agriculture can be.

A thriving market garden and orchard. An event centre. A farm shop. 700 acres of pine in transition back to native ngahere. A sheep and beef farm. And two popular festivals each year.

And at the centre of it all, a passionate community.

In Issue 11, we hear from those behind the scenes at Mangaroa:

-Chief regeneration officer @zebulonlafe on farming to the question "what does the land want to be?"

-Farmer @that_farming_mum on rebuilding the hill country with adaptive grazing

-Market gardener @dixonsnodig on why everything starts with the soil

-And Mangaroa co-steward Brian Monahan, whose measure of success is simple: "If the Mangaroa river is healthy, we know we're doing a good job."

What if our public landscapes were designed around nourishment instead of control?

At @mangaroafarms, a 4km walking trail winds through the permaculture orchard, across the pasture, through the rolling hills and along the river. The Fruit & Forage project weaves a heritage harvest trail through it - so that every ten metres or so, something edible, medicinal or ecologically valuable appears along the way.

Apples, pears, quinces, medlars, mulberries, feijoas, walnuts, edible acorns, medicinal herbs, natives and pollinator species: food for 365 days of the year. Larger destination food forests sit along the route, places to rest, gather, learn and harvest. Interpretive signage turns the walk into a self-guided education in forest succession, herbalism, native foods and honourable harvest.

The trail is a public food source, open to all people at all times. It's a biodiversity corridor and a social experiment in trust and generosity all at once. Not primarily a commercial venture - a cultural one. A place where children might grow up knowing exactly which tree their fruit came from. A future where abundance is the baseline.

Support @mangaroafarms in the @maearthstudio Funding Round. Every donation is multiplied before 21 July.

Mangaroa Farms Butchery is now open 🥩

We're excited to announce that we're finally able to process our regeneratively raised beef and lamb, right here on site. Thanks to all the awesome effort from Miki @that_farming_mum and Jake, we're now able to bring things a little closer to home.

This means more fresh meat in the shop (fully stocked in a couple of weeks), more consistency with online orders (frozen only, and North Island delivery only), and some exciting new offerings on the way. We're equally excited about the relocalisation of food, providing access to meat products of the highest quality we know how, at affordable pricing.

Order now via link in bio 🍽️

We're excited to announce the upcoming launch of our own Mangaroa Farms Butchery, enabling us to have full autonomy over food production, regular fresh meat at the farm shop, and nose to tail utilisation of our animals.

You can engage with our fresh meat offerings by:
- Visiting the Farm Shop / Kete Kai to find regular, fresh beef & lamb on the shelves. Fresh run coming soon.

- Order frozen Mangaroa meat online, delivering locally around the North Island. *Please note - fresh meat will only be available in the Farm Shop.

- Order a full or half carcass - we'll be offering better value through providing full or half carcasses (sides) of beef and lamb locally.

🥩 Express your interest at https://meat.mangaroa.org

Big thanks to the Coulston family, particularly Miki @that_farming_mum, Jake and Rob, for leading this project with such passion and commitment. We also honour the McLay family, who owned the butchery facility before it was in Mangaroa Farms' stewardship. We're proud to continue this legacy.

Stay tuned 🐄

Big mahi last week from Miki, Jake, Riley and Emily holding it down for lamb docking. Docking is an iconic parts of the year in Kiwi farming, a true sign of spring, and a process that keeps the flock healthy and happy. 🐑

It’s not the most glamorous job on the farm - docking of the tail, a vitamin boost, an ear mark to keep track, and a check on the boys — but it’s all part of setting our lambs up for a good life. These little moments now help prevent bigger issues later, like fly strike, which no one wants to see.

Even with the wild spring we’ve had, the lambs are thriving. Plenty of clean water, lush paddocks, and some proper sunshine lately has them bouncing back to their mums and into the next phase of life.

Keen to see what it’s all about? Come along to Open Day this Saturday. Meet the crew, have a wander, and soak up the spring energy. Link in bio. 💚

Shout out to @riley_priest1 @that_farming_mum @emily.potter
