I learned when my early originals were yellow in the leaves after about 6 months in the ground...
Planting Rhododendron in a heavy clay soil does not work for the plants. It's actually a death sentence for them .
They are sitting on a very large well drained peaty loam of leafmould, ericaceous compost, peat moss, and pine needle's. And the raised soils around them are the same. Well mulched to lock in moisture and deter weeds.

#Rhododendren #rhododendrons #blumenliebe

Rhododendron Luteum is looking incredibly beautiful.
The only Deciduous Azalea that is native to Europe, I believe.
The first time I encountered this plant, I could smell it before I saw it....
I have propagated more since, there are 3 of them in the garden now.......
Here's to horticultural endeavours....

These plants are Rhododendron mallotum hybrids made in 2011. I pollinated yak x rex with pollen from mallotum from RSBG in 2011. Off course the purpose was having plants with lovely foliage but I had hoped for red colour too. I got lovely leaves but one plant that has bloomed had almost white flowers. We have had a rather cold winter with minus 15 degrees C, so You can see that the cold weather has made brown leaves on one of the plants. @rhodygarden @thatrhodylady @rhodosean

Rhododendron 'Silver Skies' the perfect little shrub. (0°F, 3', R1, morning full sun afternoon shade, white edged with pink, light silvery indumentum) got it from @rocky.knoll.farm

Camellia Sasanqua 'Kanjiro' (0° F, 15', R1 [easy to take care of], Shade to dappled sun, lightly fragrant semi-double hot pink flowers, glossy dark green foliage, bright green new leaf growth, fall to winter here in PNW). Mine is only 2.5 ft tall right now. North facing spot lots of shade and rain, it seems blooming pretty happy even though some grow info shows it likes east or west facing.

A Yak that's "all that." Rhododendron 'Coral Breeze' (0°F, 4' compact, R1, part shade/part sun, early, rose) swooning over this new yak, I am so enamored as it showed up so beautiful when shipped from @rocky.knoll.farm one of the many great Yaks created by Jack Olson who has been growing Rhododendrons for over 60 years. Fuzzy branches/stems/tomentum/buds and soft biege fuzzy indumentum. Seen this one bloom only in pictures, now in my collection I'm so excited to see it bloom in person. It's a show stopper in blooms and especially the foliage. Once big enough it will go into a new Yak future installation I am planning.

Rhododendron Pachysanthum entering the chat. Got the Pachy and a beautiful yak ('Coral Breeze') from @rocky.knoll.farm created by Jack Olson, who has been growing Rhododendrons for over 60 years. The same day I also found Jack Olson's other badass Yak called 'Kodiak' in West Seattle, now I have 2 of his yaks and a pachy. To be honest this was my best shipment of Rhododendrons ever. They were both in great shape, and packed so well they made the trip across state lines from Oregon flawlessly. Online Rhododendron ordering is always such a crap shoot, but Rocky Knoll Farm came through with flying indumentums. R. Pachysanthum (species, -10°F, R1, 3', loves shade, pink and white w/ red spots)

A classic one all the aficionados know. Rhododendron Edgeworthii used in many famous crosses, seen at the Rutherford Conservatory at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden.

Repost from @thatrhodylady. 🐝🌼

“I think this is a Yellow-faced Bumble Bee (Bombus vosnesenskii) of WA State @highlinebotanicalgarden just bumbling around. He had yellow face and one yellow stripe on the lower abdomen.“
