With Día de Muertos approaching, we wanted to share a little about these plants and the long history of cultivation behind the flowers you see on ofrendas.

Tagetes erecta was domesticated in Mesoamerica. For generations, people have selected and saved cempasúchil seeds for qualities they value, including color and fragrance. These flowers have long been part of ceremonial life in parts of Mexico, and today their color and scent hold particular significance in many Día de Muertos traditions. Families lay paths of petals to the ofrenda, their color and scent believed to guide loved ones home. The flower has also been used for dying, medicine and holds many stories.

Cempasúchil comes from Nahuatl, often translated as “twenty flowers.” And a bloom really is a gathering of flowers: many small florets growing together in a single head, called a capitulum. It’s a feature of Asteraceae, the family that includes sunflowers and daisies.

Come pick up a six-pack and grow cempasúchil in your garden, on your patio, or in a pot by your front door. Get to know marigolds more intimately - how they grow, when they flower, what their scent brings to mind. So many people before us have built relationships with these plants by tending them, learning from them, and making them part of their lives. We invite you to do the same.

A dinner that tastes like the future we’re working toward.

We’re so excited to share that @allthingswaite, headed by @_jmwaite and Chef @davinwaite of @theplotrestaurant and @wrenchandrodent, will be fashioning our meal for this year’s Fall Fundraising Dinner at @coastalrootsfarm.

The Waites are known across San Diego for innovative, sustainable sourcing, from using every scrap in the kitchen to growing produce in regenerative urban gardens. Chef Davin has collaborated with @NOAAfisheries and @Scripps_Ocean, and Jessica serves as president of the @BerryGoodFoodFndn.

It’s a delicious match for a night built around a more equitable, sustainable San Diego.

Here’s a taste of the sample menu:

🍣 Sushi bar: buffet-style selection of local fish nigiri, rolls, and veggie rolls

🎣 Tray pass: tuna prosciutto toast with burrata and balsamic, chayote poisson cru with a crispy rice cracker, and cured salmon with herb-whipped brie and plum cheong

🥬 Course one: bbq squash, quinoa, kale, and pickled onions

🐟 Course two: local fish, pasta, garden pesto, and seasonal vegetables

Vegetables will be sourced as much as possible from Coastal Roots Farm, so final selections will depend on what’s available closer to the event. Fresh from the farm, served right on the farm. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Today I had the honor to host @thika_co at @theplotrestaurant.🫛🌱🩷

This means so much to me because I found out we are both the same age and we are both so passionate about the same things! We are here doing work for the environment, for our local food systems. One day at a time, but together feels extra empowering!

Wren taught folks the art of tofu, a class of foundations. She taught them how to make tofu from scratch! 👏🏼

Wren, it was so inspiring watching you teach all the beautiful knowledge you have, I can't wait for more 🩷🩷🩷

Day 6 of SDCW and we saved some of the best for Tuesday. 🌊🔥

Today spans burrowing owl viewings in Ramona, river habitat restoration, a Women+ in Green leadership breakfast downtown, yoga on the farm at Barron Creek in Oceanside, plant-based food and health in Oceanside, greenwashing on trial in Carlsbad, a zero waste playbook workshop at the Encinitas Library, B Corp standards, a climate happy hour with Latinxs in Sustainability & Latino Outdoors, food rescue volunteering, and so much more happening across every corner of San Diego County.

And tonight our Fire Summit at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park from 6–9PM. 🔥 An evening of short fire films, a Kumeyaay welcome, a fire-side panel on strengthening San Diego's fire network, a rooftop QiGong session, a performing arts experience, and a partner showcase to close out the night. Don't forget to bring your e-waste, Dream E-Waste will be collecting electronics for free recycling in the back parking lot of The Nat.

San Diego, Day 6 is proof that this movement lives in every neighborhood, every community, and every conversation. 🌿

Today Dr. Ashanté M. Reese (@dramreese ) at @sdfoodsys reminded me of the work that I do. I bring people together to gather and to nourish each other. It's all rooted in love. I was in tears because I needed to be reminded of who I am and how I am showing up for the people through my radical hospitality.

Radical Hospitality means, you belong here. I have a seat for you at the table. You are family.

I remember when we first started doing these classes, I shed some tears infront of everyone because I couldn't believe I was doing this work. I was impressed by how people show up to gather and learn together . Also because @_jmwaite & @davinwaite believe in me and let me do whatever I want (I won't do anything to crazy, don't worry). So yeah, plot is family. I have so much respect from our Chefs. Thank you @pizzatraplord & @traviinsta for letting me show your passions with our guest. I wouldn't be able to do it without you all.

Our next class will be the art of tofu making with @thika_co, Wednesday October 7th.

“So many foods!!” There is so much joy in watching kiddos grow up in these gardens, and we want to make this possible for as many families as we can! In partnership with @theplotrestaurant we launched Free Range Kids over the summer, offering free kids meals through July and August. Moving into fall and winter, we will offer our “kids to eat free” program Mondays and Tuesdays for lunch and dinner. Come hang in the garden and let the little ones roam free!

Join us as we come together on this ancestral land to celebrate the Kumeyaay and Luiseño Peoples of San Diego, California — to commemorate the land, share in the wisdom of our elders, and gather in music, food, and fellowship. Here I go again, waxing poetic about The Plot. This time, it was Chef Travis’ hot sauce class that stole my heart {along with the bites and libations that accompanied such a serious education}. We tasted so many different sauces/peppers, learned how to make our own, and left with a bottle of sauce and some fresh peppers from The Plot’s very own garden. I guess it’s about time I turn my little greenhouse into a bit of a pepper hothouse, eh?

Now I have to ask: what’s your go-to hot sauce? 🌶️ 🔥
