Kindling, the debut from The Powers Ensemble, introduces the singular voice of Mikey Powers—booming, emphatic, and unlike anything else in contemporary folk—joined by Asheville luminaries Libby Rodenbough, Avey Tare, Charlie Boss, Clay White, and Shane Justice McCord for a debut that feels equally rooted in chamber music, folk cabaret, and Appalachian ritual. Its soaring arrangements carry the gravity of medieval procession and the ecstatic pull of pagan celebration, turning songs about growth, decay, death, and renewal into a world where ancient customs feel vividly present.

“Kindling” by The Powers Ensemble is OUT NOW!
Listen to it, buy it, stream it, share it. All of that! We’ve got CDs and tapes for sale on Bandcamp or in person (albeit the tapes are stuck in production purgatory for the time being.)

We are beyond honored to be a part of this album. We’ve been friends & fans of Mikey Powers for decade give or take and when he came to us about putting this is out there was no hesitation in saying yes. This album is pure beauty. Very deeply human and emotive music. Congrats to the @thepowersensemble we are so stoked to see what’s next from this group of talented musicians.

Earlier this week, the one and only @shamtunes (in trio form featuring @shanejusticemccord, @thepowersensemble, & @chajbo) stopped by @wfmu on their way to Baltimore & recorded what is probably one of my favorite live sets I’ve yet had the privilege to air. Tune in tomorrow between 9 & 11am EST to hear their gorgeous session (including several currently unreleased pieces slated for an incredible forthcoming LP)

Beautifully engineered by @dhollinghurst!

Saturday, June 13, 9 to 11am EST
91.1 FM & wfmu.org
