Nashville didn’t go exactly how I planned… and I think that’s what made it so good.

I came here hoping to get a song taken by a publisher. That didn’t happen. My song got a “no.”

But a funny thing happens when you keep showing up after the no.

I got to sit down with my attorneys and talk about what I’m building with Suteos Studios.

I met a young artist who wants to get together and co-write.

The Bluebird Cafe was sold out, but I showed up anyway. The lady at the door let me in, and somehow I ended up sitting right in the middle of one of the most legendary songwriting rooms in Nashville.

Afterward, I got to meet Tim Nichols a songwriter whose work has been part of country music history.

And along the way, I met people, shook hands, had conversations and made connections that never would’ve happened if I had stayed home because I was afraid somebody might tell me no.

That may be the biggest thing I’m learning on this journey:

Sometimes the “no” isn’t the story.
Sometimes it’s just what gets you in the room where the real story starts.

I’m heading home without a song being taken.

But I’m heading home with new relationships, new opportunities, new perspective and even more belief in what I’m doing.

I’ll take that trade every single time.

Keep showing up.
Keep writing.
Keep knocking.

God has a funny way of opening doors you weren’t even knocking on. 🙏🎶

Six months ago, I joined the @nsaiofficial (NSAI), and I really had no idea just how much this journey was going to mean to me.

A big thank you to @timnicholstn for pointing me toward NSAI in the first place. That introduction ended up opening a door that has helped me grow tremendously as a songwriter.

I’ve been writing songs in some form for nearly 30 years. Some were written a long time ago, some were recent, and plenty of them needed more work than I realized. 😂 Over these past six months, I’ve been able to go back through that entire journey, send songs in, get honest professional feedback, rewrite them, learn from them, and become a better songwriter because of it.

NSAI has given me something every songwriter needs, people who will encourage you, but who will also tell you where the song can be stronger. I’ve learned more about structure, melody, storytelling, phrasing, getting to the hook quicker, and learning when a song is finished…and when it isn’t.

Along the way, I’ve been blessed with 15 “One to Watch” recognitions, had 4 songs selected during publisher pitches, and had “Why Not Me” selected for the Bob Kingsley Top 40.

Those accomplishments mean a lot to me, but what means even more is knowing that I’m a better songwriter today than I was six months ago.

I can’t express enough gratitude for everyone at the NSAI who has listened, evaluated, encouraged, challenged, taught, and opened doors for me.

And again, thank you Tim for pointing me in the right direction and encouraging me to get involved with NSAI. Sometimes one conversation can change the direction of a journey and Tim’s suggestion did just that.

I still have a long way to go, and I’m still learning every single day. But after writing songs for nearly three decades, it feels pretty special to be more excited about songwriting today than I’ve ever been.

Thank you, NSAI. And we’re just getting warmed up. ❤️‍🔥🎶

I can’t believe it’s been a year. I still think about him a lot. The days where I’m just mad he’s gone, frustrated that I don’t know why and sad that we can’t just jump on a call and catch up.

Miss you, Brett. Keep singing those songs up in Heaven. I know you have the largest crowd of angels watching and we still smile when your songs come on down here. Love you brother.
