One day my publisher asked me: “Do you want to write with Burt Bacharach?”🎹 Six Grammys. Three Oscars. An Emmy. And the first thing he did was make sure I knew I belonged in the room. What he taught me is in the video and what he wrote in my copy of his book is at the end. 🎸 Keynote: “You Belong in the Room”—link in bio.#songwriter #nashville #burtbacharach #countrymusic #songwriting taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @timnicholstn

I pitched this song idea over and over. Everybody passed. “What else ya got?” Then one day…right room, right co-writer. Keith Whitley and Earl Thomas Conley cut it. It went to Number 1. Moral of the story’s in the video. 🎸Keynote: “You Belong in the Room”…link in bio.

Two new songs out this weekend…“Good Girls and Cowgirls,” and “The Other Side of Hurtin”…written with @zachtop and Carson Chamberlain. And I’ll be honest…there’s no story behind either one. No flipping a coin, nothing scribbled on a napkin, no line from a movie. Just three guys showing up and doing the work. Turns out that’s how most of ‘em get written. #zachtop #countrymusic #songwriter #nashvillesongwriter taken in Sundance Mountain Resort by @timnicholstn

Been working on something new…a keynote called You Belong In The Room: Belonging before brilliance.
Everything I’ve learned in Nashville writing rooms about ideas, collaboration and culture…as well as believing you belong. Turns out it applies just about everywhere.#keynotespeaker #nashville #songwriter #leadership #youbelongintheroom taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @timnicholstn

If the sun had been shining that morning, this song never gets written.
It’s a gray, overcast day on I-40 driving to Music Row. Two lines pop into my head, but I have no idea how they might fit in a song.
I take them to Zack Turner, and he immediately has the answer.
That song became. “I’m Over You,” recorded by the late great Keith Whitley. #keithwhitley #nashvillesongwriter #countrymusic #storybehindthesong #musicrow taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @timnicholstn
