From a farm in southern Italy to the heart of New York jazz, Pasquale Grasso plays guitar the way a pianist would, shaped by classical training and the bebop of Bud Powell. He’s the guitarist on Samara Joy’s Grammy-winning Linger Awhile and DownBeat’s 2024 Rising Star on guitar.

He spent an evening with us, playing and telling the stories behind his music. Thank you, Pasquale, for letting us hear where every note comes from.

CEO of DOGPOUND and GP at @CrushItVentures, for a conversation on the evolution of fitness, the role of community in building DOGPOUND, and Jenny’s path into investing in brands like @TheNinetyOfficial.

One of the things I’ve always struggled with is flexibility.

For most of my life, I simply accepted that this was who I was. So I never really focused on making it better.

Instead, I did what most of us do. I focused on my strengths and protected the areas where I was weak.

Why confront something that was uncomfortable when I could just stay in the places where I was good?

But as I’ve gotten older, I’m realizing that the things we neglect don’t necessarily stay the same.

My flexibility has become more challenging. My balance is being affected. And I’m beginning to see how connected these things are to how freely I can move through the world.

That got my attention.

Because I don’t want to spend the next chapter of my life protecting my limitations.

I want to challenge them.

Maybe I was never naturally flexible. Maybe I never gave my body the opportunity to become more flexible.

There’s a difference.

I’m interested in being capable until my last breath.

I want to keep bending, reaching, climbing, running, balancing, squatting, playing, exploring and moving without restrictions for as long as my body will allow me.

The things we call weaknesses aren’t always weaknesses.

Sometimes they’re simply areas we haven’t trained yet. #nodecay

Our third floor was designed for the people who bring it to life.

Anyone who has spent time here knows it never looks the same twice. Indelible in Soho’s history since the 1800s, but every gathering gives the space a new identity.

It has become a home for book launches, reading salons, breathwork sessions, showrooms, Drink, Draw, Dance, and countless conversations. Every host brings something different, and every gathering is part of our story.

Memory, like womanhood, is passed down without words. We carry it without ever having picked it up.

The joi Film Salon brought a curated selection of short films from around the world to Lightning Society, each one chosen by Paris-born filmmaker Ani Simon-Kennedy for the way it explores memory as inherited, reshaped, and carried across generations. Her feature The Short History of the Long Road premiered at Tribeca in 2019. Her work has screened at top festivals worldwide, supported by Sundance, Film Independent, and the Gotham, which named her one of their 2025 Series Creators to Watch.

After the screening, the floor was open. Reflection, discussion, and unbridled conversation followed. When the right people are in the same space at the same time, magic happens.

joi hosts salons and cultural experiences for women across New York, invite-only and intentionally intimate. This one found its home at Lightning Society.

Dr. Ivan Shumkov holds four master’s degrees between Harvard, the University of Florence, and ETSA Barcelona.

He speaks six languages and has spent over twenty years studying how buildings shape the people inside them. He calls it neuroarchitecture: the way scale, light, material, and density quietly shape perception, behavior, and every decision made in a given space.

Timothy Phillips, our founder and Yale-trained architect, joined him for a fireside chat.

Surrounded by a live example of the power of place designed with human connection as the governing principle, every point Dr. Shumkov made felt viscerally real.

What does good taste mean in the age of algorithms?

That was the question du jour at the Galconomist Salon, the live edition of their Taste Issue: who decides what’s good, what’s gone wrong, and whether any of us still have real points of view.

Twenty people, each with a piece to share: a story, a song on repeat for years, a piece of art nobody could agree was made by a human or a machine.

The line of the night: “nostalgia plus innovation breeds taste.”

Natalia Clavier reminded us what it feels like to be fully alive.

Natalia was singing as a soloist in concert halls at eleven years old, long before Buenos Aires choirs, Barcelona raves, and recording studios in Washington, DC.

When Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation heard her demo, he made her their lead vocalist within the month. Fifteen years of touring followed, then her solo album, Lumen, produced by Grammy winner Adrian Quesada and released on Nacional Records.

With ‘Presencia: Shared Human Pulse’, she brought that lifetime of artistry to Lightning Society through live music, breathwork, somatic movement, and a song circle that invited everyone into the experience.

Guided by her voice and presence, we all breathed together, moved together, and made it a moment.⚡️

427 Broadway was completed in 1871, designed by architect Thomas R. Jackson as the A.J. Dittenhofer Warehouse.

Cast iron columns, arched windows, wide-plank floors, all of it original to a building that helped define the neighborhood now considered home to the largest concentration of cast iron facades anywhere in the world.

The building looked exactly like this before anyone ever hung a single light.

Once a month we host a salon, inspired by the French literary salons. Everyone comes knowing the topic and brings a point of view, and we go deep on one idea together. You come for the conversation and leave with new friends and a new way of seeing things.

This month’s theme: what it means to be human in the age of AI.
