Our third floor was designed for the people who bring it to life.

Anyone who has spent time here knows it never looks the same twice. Indelible in Soho’s history since the 1800s, but every gathering gives the space a new identity.

It has become a home for book launches, reading salons, breathwork sessions, showrooms, Drink, Draw, Dance, and countless conversations. Every host brings something different, and every gathering is part of our story.

What would you bring here? 🧐⚡️ taken in Lightning Society by @timothyphillips

Memory, like womanhood, is passed down without words. We carry it without ever having picked it up.

The joi Film Salon brought a curated selection of short films from around the world to Lightning Society, each one chosen by Paris-born filmmaker Ani Simon-Kennedy for the way it explores memory as inherited, reshaped, and carried across generations. Her feature The Short History of the Long Road premiered at Tribeca in 2019. Her work has screened at top festivals worldwide, supported by Sundance, Film Independent, and the Gotham, which named her one of their 2025 Series Creators to Watch.

After the screening, the floor was open. Reflection, discussion, and unbridled conversation followed. When the right people are in the same space at the same time, magic happens.

joi hosts salons and cultural experiences for women across New York, invite-only and intentionally intimate. This one found its home at Lightning Society.

Dr. Ivan Shumkov holds four master’s degrees between Harvard, the University of Florence, and ETSA Barcelona.

He speaks six languages and has spent over twenty years studying how buildings shape the people inside them. He calls it neuroarchitecture: the way scale, light, material, and density quietly shape perception, behavior, and every decision made in a given space.

Timothy Phillips, our founder and Yale-trained architect, joined him for a fireside chat.

Surrounded by a live example of the power of place designed with human connection as the governing principle, every point Dr. Shumkov made felt viscerally real.

Does the space around you reflect who you are, or decide who you become?⚡️ taken in Lightning Society by @timothyphillips

427 Broadway was completed in 1871, designed by architect Thomas R. Jackson as the A.J. Dittenhofer Warehouse.

Cast iron columns, arched windows, wide-plank floors, all of it original to a building that helped define the neighborhood now considered home to the largest concentration of cast iron facades anywhere in the world.

The building looked exactly like this before anyone ever hung a single light.

Once a month we host a salon, inspired by the French literary salons. Everyone comes knowing the topic and brings a point of view, and we go deep on one idea together. You come for the conversation and leave with new friends and a new way of seeing things.

This month’s theme: what it means to be human in the age of AI.

Hosted at @lightningsociety, a home for the intellectually curious in the heart of SoHo, where connection, culture, and community come to life.

Wednesday, August 19, 6:30pm. 45 Howard St, SoHo. Tea will be served. Link in bio to grab a spot. taken in New York by @timothyphillips

Is your business running on AI yet?⚡️

Katrine Steenberg, with fifteen years running product and marketing across fintech, e-commerce, and food tech, spent a full day with us building live: personalized Claude instructions, a Notion workspace running CRM, pipeline, content, and finances. Essentially, an AI Brain inside each founder’s own Google Drive.

Divya Gugnani joined to share the view from five ventures deep, a career spanning Wander Beauty, 5 SENS, and the sale of Send the Trend to QVC.

Everybody left with their workflow laced up and running. taken in Lightning Society by @timothyphillips

You’re invited to the Salon: an evening of discussion over doomscrolling. You bring an essay, a song, a painting, a poem, or something you made relating to the theme. What follows is real conversation, real ideas, and curating our own “feed” in real life.

Next salon: July 21st at @lightningsociety in SoHo. Link in bio to join. taken in New York, New York by @timothyphillips

What an amazing experience to see Luke Heckel from Sonos and Matt Emmi from One Button present a case study about their incredible installation at Lighting Society on the Infocomm main stage!

Over the past year, Sonos and One Button have been an extraordinary partners on our project. Together we've scaled their system across 30,000sf and completely changed my understanding what was possible. From the Sonance Invisible Speakers in the Soho Ballroom that make it feel like you're inside the orchestra, to the huge network of Sonos speakers providing perfect even sound throughout Lightning Society, I couldn't be more impressed.

To Matt, Luke, and all the fantastic people on both teams: thank you for creating an environment where sound seemlessly supports the experience, where every conversation, performance, and gathering feels alive. Cheers to what we've built together, and everything still to come!

The second floor of 427 Broadway is home to the SoHo Ballroom.

Arched windows, cast-iron columns, lofted ceilings, and endless possibilities. It’s a room with a point of view and centuries of history you can feel.

Available for private events, production, and experiences, the Soho Ballroom is so much more than a blank canvas. It’s the inspiration for your next New York moment.

Design shapes how people gather.

Founder Timothy Phillips, a Yale-trained architect, brought together intentional space design and more than a decade of community building to create Lightning Society SoHo – a cultural institution that celebrates connection and belonging.

Coffee and a book on the couch.
Sunlit conversations on the rooftop.
Yoga in the ballroom.

A gathering you host yourself.

The Lightning Salon is our setting for intellectual social events. I couldn't be more excited for the book launches, panel discussions, and fireside chats to come! Last night we hosted the very first of these evenings with a conversation between three photographers, Enzo Barracco, Keith Martine, and myself.

We interviewed with Enzo about his transition from being a fashion photographer at Prada to an Emmy nominated nature photographer. Two expressions of photography that couldn't be more different. His stories of adventure, struggle, and pursuing his dreams were truly inspiring. I couldn't imagine a more perfect way to inaugurate this very special room.

Huge thank yous to Enzo for sharing your gifts with us, Keith for organizing a beautiful event and joining the panel, Alex Kroke for your photography, and Lila our endlessly charming MC.

These events are open to members and pending members by invitation. If you are interested in attending future evenings please enter your email at LightningSociety.com and start the application process. It's a the perfect way to check out the space, meet the community, and see if it might be a good fit for you. by @timothyphillips
