What follows is a conversation between grandmother and granddaughter, as Lol, Mrs Donaldson reflects on coming to the UK from Jamaica as part of the Windrush generation. In just two weeks, Lol will be 84. Sitting with her granddaughter, she shares memories that are sometimes funny, sometimes painful, and deeply honest. She recalls arriving in the UK as a 19-year-old teenage girl, brought here to marry a man in his mid-twenties whose behaviour would leave her frightened, isolated, and forced to keep painful secrets in order to protect herself and her family. As she speaks about life with her first husband Ken, his cousin Lloyd, and Lloyd’s English partner Margaret, you can see the weight of those early years returning the fear, the confusion, the survival, but also the humour and strength that carried her through. Her story is not only about migration. It is about womanhood, silence, resilience, and the hidden cost many Caribbean immigrants carried while trying to build a life in a country where they were not always made to feel welcome. These are the stories that sit behind history. A lot is said about AI and what it will do and is doing to the creative industry [💭PODCAST!!]. Especially the argument that things don’t look “real.” And honestly… I agree. AI often looks like AI. But here’s what it’s done for me: it’s made me revisit short filmmaking with a completely fresh eye. It’s opened doors. It’s made what used to be big-budget filmmaking feel… a lot more democratic. After seeing what was possible, I decided to dust off a short script I wrote 10 years ago — around the time Kanye had his very public breakdown. Earlier that same year, the film’s protagonist died. As creatives, you already know… the mind starts running wild. So I set myself a challenge: How far could I push my story using the conventional tools I know — plus AI tools I’m learning? This is the beginning of that experiment. Not the final version (there are still real elements to come). Not perfect. Just pure curiosity and creativity at play. It’s all fun and games for now… but I can’t lie — AI is improving every single day. So I guess… 👀 Character Generations based on: D.
