There’s a Filipino proverb that says:

Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan.

“He who does not look back at where he came from will not reach his destination.”

I tend to look back at old photos whenever I feel misaligned, discouraged, or defeated. It reminds me how far I’ve come and how much growth can happen when you least expect it.

This was the event that inspired me to bring @heavyrotationfm back.

roslynnc hosted a mixer with over 25 Filipino artists, creatives, producers, and builders. I almost didn’t go. Wifey dropped me off while she spent the day in LA with the kids. It was the first time in nearly 10 years that I had done anything with Filipino artists since I shut down Heavy Rotation in 2009.

That night I reconnected with people I came up with during my radio days. I met young Filipino artists thinking about leaving the Philippines to chase opportunities in the U.S. I discovered incredible local artists I had never heard before and was blown away by the music they were creating. I met people already making a dent in the universe.

Looking back, this was one of the first times I experienced what I now describe in Belonging Over Influence.

It wasn’t about being seen. It wasn’t even about representation. It was about recognition.

The feeling of walking into a room and realizing you don’t have to explain yourself. The references make sense. The stories make sense. The aspirations make sense. You recognize the people, and they recognize something in you.

That’s the spark that belonging is built on. I’m incredibly grateful for this day. Four months later, I relaunched Heavy Rotation, and the course of my life changed completely.
