Dearest Community,

You may have noticed that Traktivist activity has been quiet lately. I have unfortunately experienced the passing of several loved ones in the recents months. This has left me not feeling like myself these days.

I have been feeling a heavy weight with these losses. Some of them have dramatically shifted where my time goes, and I’ve had to reprioritize daily responsibilities.

With everything that’s going on in my personal life, I’ve decided it’s best for me to take a break from Traktivist activities outside of my day job. This will help me spend more time with my family and take better care of myself. When the days are brighter, I may pop back in every now and then, but for now I need the space to heal.

Thanks for your understanding and support. Please know I’m hanging in there by surrounding myself with loved ones and therapy. I feel blessed to be alive.

Hug your loved ones. Stay healthy. Take care.

Danny Barcelona, a self-taught drummer, was an American jazz drummer best known for his 15 years with Louis Armstrong's All-Stars. He was introduced to Louis Armstrong in 1956, and formally joined Armstrong's All-Stars band in February 1958 to replace retiring drummer Barrett Deems. Barcelona appears on more than 130 of Armstrong's recordings, including the jazz music hits "Hello, Dolly!" (1964) and "What a Wonderful World" (1968).He was also frequently introduced to audiences by Louis Armstrong as The Little Filipino Boy.
⠀
Barcelona's drumming style was described by T. Dennis Brown in The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz as being "characterized by extensive use of the ride cymbal, crisp, clean fills and breaks, and solos that exploit asymmetrical phrasing". Barcelona died in Monterey Park, CA on Sunday, April 1, 2007.

Toshiko Akiyoshi changed the face of jazz music over her sixty-year career. As one of few women and Asian musicians in the jazz world, Akiyoshi infused Japanese culture, sounds, and instruments into her music. As a pianist, bandleader, and composer-arranger, Akiyoshi cemented her place as one of the most important jazz musicians of the twentieth century.
‌
Toshiko Akiyoshi was born in 1929 in Manchuria. At the end of World War II, the Japanese in Manchuria—including Akiyoshi’s family—were forced out. The family moved back to occupied Japan, where they experienced the hardships of postwar life. Since Japan was still under occupation, there were many clubs that catered to both soldiers and the local community. The clubs needed musicians and the teenaged Akiyoshi got her first job playing in the clubs and in small combos. By 1951, she was playing piano professionally and leading her own jazz group.
‌
In 1952, pianist Oscar Peterson discovered Akiyoshi while he was on tour in Japan. Peterson persuaded producer Norman Granz to record her on his Verve label. This recording became Akiyoshi’s big break. After this opportunity, Akiyoshi came to the United States in 1956 to begin studying at the Berklee School of Music and became the first Japanese musician at the school.
‌
In 1959, she moved to New York City and established a reputation as a fine “bebop” player. She remembered facing discrimination in the jazz world because she was a woman and Asian. In an interview, Akiyoshi recalled hearing people ask “’Japanese play jazz, really?’”
‌
She began showing her talent as a composer-arranger for big bands and worked with Charles Mingus in 1962.
By 1973, Akiyoshi formed the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.
In 1982, her band debuted at Carnegie Hall and went on to record 22 albums and receive 14 Grammy nominations. In 2003, Akiyoshi disbanded her orchestra to focus on piano. In 2007, she was named an NEA Jazz Master.

Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz upright bassist, pianist, composer, bandleader, and author. In Mingus's autobiography “Beneath the Underdog” his mother was described as "the daughter of an English/Chinese man and a South-American woman", and his father was the son "of a black farm worker and a Swedish woman".

A major proponent of collective improvisation, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history, with a career spanning three decades and collaborations with other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock. Mingus's work ranged from advanced bebop and avant-garde jazz with small and midsize ensembles – pioneering the post-bop style on seminal recordings like Pithecanthropus Erectus (1956) and Mingus Ah Um (1959) – to progressive big band experiments such as The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963).
